A Background Investigator is a civilian employee who conducts and compiles personal and professional background investigations for public safety candidates by interviewing employers, co-workers, neighbors, law enforcement officials, military personnel, members of the candidate’s family, and personal references; prepares reports on findings; makes recommendations as to background findings; and performs other related duties. Background Investigators in the higher pay grades may supervise or act as a lead worker to staff involved in the above duties.
Salary: $61,554.00 - $91,496.00
Public Service: As a Background Investigator for the City of Los Angeles Personnel Department, you play a major role in achieving the Mayor’s top goal of public safety. The City of Los Angeles demands that candidates for public safety positions meet very high standards. Background Investigators help to identify those individuals with the highest chance of success. As a member of the Personnel Department’s Public Safety Bureau, Background Investigation Division, your main client is one of the most famous and admired police forces in the world, the Los Angeles Police Department. You also serve other critical City police forces such as Airport Police, Port Police, and General Services Police. Additional clients include the Los Angeles Fire Department, the Department of Water and Power, Los Angeles World Airports, Public Works, and other agencies with public safety personnel, as well as some special clients.
Summary of Duties:
A Background Investigator is a civilian employee who conducts field investigations and compiles personal and professional background investigations for public safety and other candidates; researches, assembles, analyzes and interprets information from diverse sources; conducts investigations by interviewing employers, co-workers, neighbors, law enforcement officials, military personnel, members of the candidates’ family and personal references; compiles and prepares thorough and objective reports and recommendations on background investigation findings; and performs other related duties.
1.Two years of full-time paid sworn experience within the last ten years as a peace officer performing background investigations for employment or criminal matters; and
2.Submission of the Background Investigator Supplemental Training and Experience Questionnaire and City application at the time of filing.
1.A valid California Driver’s license is required. Upon appointment, Background Investigators employed by the Personnel Department will be required to provide an automobile, properly insured, for use in City service. Mileage will be paid in accordance with established rates.
2.Possession of a California Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) Background Investigator Core Course Certificate is highly desired but not required.
3.Proficiency in Microsoft Office software programs such as Word and Excel are desired but not required.
4.Work location is Downtown Los Angeles.
