DUTIES SUMMARY:

Installs, maintains, overhauls, and repairs a variety of electrical and mechanical water pumping plant equipment; installs, maintain, and repairs electrical wiring systems, equipment, and appurtenant fixtures; and performs other related duties as required.

Special Working Conditions: Must be available for stand-by-duty and be available for immediate response in cases of emergency.
Description:
  • Installs, maintains, repairs, and overhauls electrical pumping plant, treatment plant, filter plant, chlorinator station, and related water systems equipment.
  • Performs service work on electrical and mechanical equipment such as relays, contractors, float switches, motor controllers, chlorinator parts, and solenoid valves.
  • Inspects and tests plant electrical equipment for open circuits, short circuits, and locates defects.
  • Disassembles electrical equipment.
  • Cleans and replaces parts.
  • Fabricates various electrical parts by using materials of appropriate conducting, resisting, and insulating properties.
  • Overhauls and repairs large electric motors, large air blowers, electric motor-driven air compressors and air or hydraulically actuated butterfly valves.
  • Repairs or renews worn centrifugal pump bearings and shaft sleeves.
  • Locates and determines cause of equipment operating trouble and carries out the repairs or remedial action necessary.
  • Participates in the major overhauling of plant equipment, replacing work or defective parts and reconditioning equipment.
  • Reads and interprets electrical wiring plans and diagrams.
  • Makes sketches of wiring systems to facilitate maintenance and repair work.
  • Estimates cost, time, and materials needed for repair and maintenance work.
  • Supervises the workers assigned.
  • Performs maintenance work on pump station buildings.
  • Operates a vehicle in the transportation of materials and workers.
Requirements:

Training and Experience:

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:

  • completion of the eighth grade and
  • four (4) years of experience in the installation, repair, overhaul, and maintenance of a variety of electrical plant or industrial equipment including high voltage lines and equipment, and
  • some experience in the operation, repair, and overhaul work on diesel-driven equipment or electrically-driven pumps.

License Requirement:

  • Possession of a valid State of Hawai`i Journeylevel Electrician's License or a Journeylevel Industrial Electrician's License, (Scan and attach license to your application.) and
  • a valid Hawai`i State drivers' license (Class 3) at time of filling or any other valid comparable motor vehicle license. (You will be required to submit a valid driver's license at time of the job interview.)

Examination: Training and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's education and experience as presented in the application. The minimum passing score is 70, which indicates that the kind and length of experience is of the minimum required for the job.

Knowledge of:

  • the theory of electricity;
  • tools, material, and practices used in the operation, maintenance, and repair of mechanically and electrically operated pumps and other equipment such as boilers, altitude, and hydraulic valves, chlorinators, electric motors, etc.;
  • installation, maintenance, and repair of high and low voltage electrical lines, equipment, and appliances;
  • laws, rules, and standards pertaining to electrical construction and maintenance;
  • hazards and safety practices involved in working around electricity and moving machinery.

Ability to:

  • read and interpret electrical wiring plans and diagrams;
  • diagnose mechanical and electrical defects in the operation of pumping plant equipment;
  • repair, wind or rewind motors;
  • install, maintain, and repair plant electrical systems and equipment;
  • estimate material requirements;
  • understand and follow oral and written instructions, work harmoniously with others;
  • work under obnoxious conditions.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

For the period January 1, 2012 - June 30, 2012, furloughs will be implemented and salary will be reduced by 9.23%.
 
For the period July 1, 2012 - June 30, 2013, furloughs will be implemented and salary will be reduced by 4.615%.
