Located in the heart of California’s San Joaquin Valley, the City of Fresno (pop. 510,000+) is the fifth largest city in the state. The City is entering into a threshold period in its history. Under the direction of visionary Mayor Ashley Swearengin and a dedicated City Council, the community is committing itself to new planning philosophies focusing on revitalized core neighborhoods, export-oriented economic development, and a re-energized historic Downtown. An updated General Plan and Downtown Specific Plans are in environmental review stages, and the new Director will be on point for final adoption and to lead the City through plan implementation. The Development and Resource Management Department (Community Development) is supported by 140 staff and is responsible for the planning, zoning and building inspections functions; resource efficiency programs; housing; and community-wide revitalization efforts.
A high energy leader, the ideal candidate will be an outstanding manager of people and projects. Motivated by a sincere passion for improving the quality of life in communities, he/she will be accomplished managing community revitalization. The new Director will possess in-depth familiarity with contemporary urban planning principles and practices that have direct relevance to Fresno. A minimum of five years of management experience and a Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline are required. A Master’s degree and/or AICP certification is preferred.
