Job Description

Under general supervision, position performs work of moderate difficulty in supervising, counseling and providing for the physical and emotional needs of youth in detention, including admission and release, and may also assist in the FACE-IT program. This is professional detention work, providing for the well-being and security of residents.

The Juvenile Counselor is to adhere to policies, establish positive cooperative relationships with others, and provide effective oral and written communication. This position is also responsible for light housekeeping duties including the cleaning and upkeep of the building and some laundry duties.

The selected candidate will be a Sworn Officer of the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit and eligible to receive a shift differential pay.

Description:

Required Skills

Good knowledge of Adolescent Growth, Development, and Behavioral Psychology. Good knowledge of Modern Correction practices as applied in the rehabilitation, treatment, counseling, and supervision of adolescents. Ability to handle crisis situations. Ability to observe and record behavior patterns. Ability to handle situations in a manner that is mature, responsible, and professional.

Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with others. Knowledge of teamwork concepts and practices. Good verbal and written communication skills. Skill in the use of behavior modification, behavior management, and interpersonal techniques.

Requirements:

Required Experience

Requires completion of Baccalaureate Degree from a College or University of recognized standing with coursework in Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Criminal Justice, or Corrections.

Candidates for this position must be certified by the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts (AOIC). Currently, the AOIC does not make this application available electronically.  Paper copies of the AOIC application can be obtained from the Lake County Human Resources Department, Court Administration, Adult Probation, or Depke Juvenile Center.  Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and live in Illinois at time of hiring or within six (6) months.

Must pass an extensive criminal history, employment background check, and must not have any convictions.

Must be physically able to assist in the restraint of aggressive adolescents. Must have a current driver's license.  Working knowledge of the Spanish language, is helpful.
