THE POSITION
Performs manual labor, utilized as a helper on a crew; assists with routine maintenance of city-owned trees; may operate automotive, grounds, and/or maintenance equipment.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists work crews in the planting and care of trees and shrubs; clears limbs and branches from trimming and removal operations; operates hand and power tools; assists in tree spraying operations; operates limb chipper and chipper truck; assists with snow removal activities; performs special projects; climbs trees to perform maintenance while using industry accepted rope and saddle techniques; and performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High School diploma or GED.
Experience: At least 1 year of related manual labor experience. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
Knowledge: Knowledge of methods and processes related to maintaining trees.
Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens; perform manual labor for extended periods of time; understand oral and written instructions; and operate or receive training on various types of maintenance and construction equipment.
Skills: Skill in the use of maintenance equipment.
Licenses, Certificates, or Equipment Required: Colorado driver's license with a good driving history. Able to obtain class B CDL within 60 days from hire date. This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS Physical Demands: Heavy physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 100 pounds; frequent lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds; considerable walking and standing; regular pushing, pulling and bending; some hand/eye and foot/eye coordination to operate mowing and other motorized equipment; some hearing and listening for receiving and interpreting information and warning signals. Work Environment: Regularly works outdoors with exposure to all weather conditions; regular exposure to dust, noise, and chemicals. Must be available to work overtime, weekends, and holidays in emergency situations including snow removal.
Equipment Used: Hand and power tools and equipment including tractors common to urban forestry maintenance as well as chain saws.
