Athens-Clarke County has a population of 117,000 over 122 square miles, and is home to the University of Georgia. The City of Athens and the Clarke County government unified in 1991 so that Athens-Clarke County is governed by a part-time Mayor elected at large, and ten (10) part-time Commissioners elected from districts. Athens-Clarke County is a Manager form of government. The Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County has a general fund budget of $104 million, with approximately 1573 full time employees, and is seeking an individual with strong leadership, management and interpersonal skills to serve as the Economic Development Director.
This position, under the supervision and direction of the Manager, will direct the newly created Athens-Clarke County Department of Economic Development. This position is the primary recruiter and point of contact for Athens-Clarke County economic development efforts to enhance the community’s economic base. Additionally, this position will direct the operations and activities of the Department of Economic Development. This position requires the cultivation of partnerships with public officials, economic development agencies, industrial development/ business representatives and citizen stakeholders. This position also requires an understanding of the principles and practices of economic development, marketing, industrial/commercial recruitment, financial incentives, and land development. Required: Qualified applicants must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business, Economics, or closely related field; supplemented by five (5) years of experience in community development, real estate, or economic development; and four (4) years of supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Qualified applicants must also possess a valid driver’s license.
A Master’s degree and Certified Economic Developer certification (CEcD) are preferred.
Final candidates must successfully pass the pre-employment process that includes a thorough background investigation of employment, educational history, driving history, criminal history, and credit history.

This position is a professional level position (at-will) and serves at the discretion of the Manager.
