Job Description

These are summer positions for beginning technical civil engineering work performed in a training capacity. Work involves such tasks as assisting on a surveying party, operating survey equipment and performing related mathematical computations in a training capacity, performing basic construction inspections, investigations, conducting field and laboratory tests on construction materials, collecting traffic data for traffic studies and related activities. Supervision and training is received from a higher level technician or a professional engineer. Work is performed according to explicit instructions or established procedures and methods.

Required Skills

Some skill in the making of accurate mathematical calculations. Ability to make and maintain records of technical computations. Ability and willingness to learn technical engineering tasks and procedures. Ability to use engineering equipment, instruments and testing devices. Ability to communicate effectively and follow oral and/or written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships.

Required Experience

One to two years of college level courses which should include college algebra and trigonometry. Civil Engineering major preferred, but not required. Must possess a valid Illinois Drivers License. Good physical condition sufficient to allow field inspection work in all weather conditions and working on road construction sites.
