RISE/Paha Programs Activity Specialists

Summary:

These vital summer program positions work as part of the Staff Team for the summer day program held in the City of Lakewood.  The purpose of our program is to provide recreational, educational and therapeutic opportunities for youth and young adults with disabilities in a safe and fun day camp environment.
These key staff members work in a temporary part-time capacity directly with camper groups where the environment is ever-changing and fast-paced surrounded by a professional staff committed to serving our participants and providing an optimal experience.

Description:
Essential Job Function:
·         Perform job in a professional manner, i.e. dress appropriately, arrive on time, stay until the end of your shift, attend all appropriate staff meetings, and staff orientation.
·         Responsible to supervise and lead recreational summer activities with children, youth and young adults with disabilities in both the Camp Paha and PAT programs.
·         Responsible for planning, monitoring, and evaluating age-appropriate programs and activities for campers and participants.
·         Lead activities with a positive and enthusiastic attitude.
·         Provide well-planned activities specific to your appropriate activity area and adapt activities so that campers of all ability levels can participate.
·         Attend and participate in pre-camp training and regular staff meetings.
·         Provide leadership for other staff as designated or directed by the Administration Team.
·         Responsible for supporting the coordination of Friday In Camp Fun Days and other special events as directed.
·         Work with campers, participants and staff of all ability levels in a caring, consistent, and non-judgmental fashion.
·         Responsible to work cooperatively as a team member with other staff.
·         Responsible to prepare activity lesson plans in a timely manner and submit those plans to the Assistant Director for Volunteers and On-site Programs by the designated time.
·         Responsible for the care and use of program equipment and supplies, including those items used in specific specialty areas as well as those used by multiple areas.
·         Responsible for making sure the materials necessary for the activities planned are ordered and in stock.
·         Provide help to all of the staff with ideas of activities that they may use with their campers during group room time or group down time.
·         Serve as a role model for campers, participants and staff by being caring, sharing, honest, enthusiastic, compassionate, and good sports.
·         Assist staff with the physical, social and emotional needs of the campers. This may include feeding and helping with other personal needs.
·         Report directly to the Assistant Director for Volunteers and On-site Programming.
·         Abide by and enforce the RISE program’s “No Isolated Moments” policy where, when one or more campers are present, there must be at least 2 staff present as well (at minimum; see ratio requirements above).
·         Follow all American Camping Association (ACA) accreditation and Child Care License standards as set forth by RISE Coordinator and those respective agencies.
·         Be familiar with City of Lakewood policies and procedures and adhere to those procedures.
·         Other related duties as assigned.
Specific Job Functions
·         Report directly to the Assistant Director for Volunteers and On-site Programming.
·         Develop and plan activities relative to your specific activity area.
·         Prepare lesson plans regarding activities in your specific activity area and submit those to the Assistant Director for Volunteers and On-site Programming for review in a timely manner.
·         Manage and procure supplies as needed for your specific activity area as well as group activity areas, as coordinated by the Assistant Director for Volunteers and On-site Programming.
·         Develop activities appropriate to and in sync with PAT program goals, including incorporating elements of skill building and education in to activities.
·         Assist PAT groups with developing and planning for Transition Field Trips.
·         Support skill development (through activities) in both the Camp Paha and PAT programs.
·         Effectively utilize planning time for planning-related tasks. This may include submitting measurable work output (such as lesson plans, etc) at the end of said times.
·         Be prepared to direct staff assisting the setup of your program area every morning.
·         Implement planned activities and modify them as needed to suit group needs.
·         Adapt activities as needed so that campers of all ability levels can participate.
·         Evaluate programs for appropriateness and quality as directed by the Assistant Director for Volunteers and On-site Programming.
·         Assist in the development of Friday On-site Fun Days with other Activity Specialists, the Assistant Director for Volunteers and On-site Programming as well as the rest of the Administration Team.
Requirements:

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

·         Minimum Age 18 (one year of college complete).
·         Must have or obtain a physical examination prior to employment renewable every 24 months.
·         Working toward or hold a degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Special Education, Recreation and other related fields, or experience in a specialized field or with people with disabilities.
·         Complete Colorado Medications Administrations Certification (training provided).
·         Must furnish written proof of at least 480 contact hours supervising children (up to age 18). Contact hours can be a summation of full or part time work and must come from a previous supervisor on company letterhead.
·         Background in teaching/coaching or related experience strongly preferred.
 

KSA'S AND PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQS:

  Ability to work with persons with a variety of physical, emotional and mental disabilities.

·         Knowledge and ability to adapt, motivate, and initiate creative programs in specialized areas.
·         Demonstrate, teach and adapt, indoor and outdoor, individual and group recreational skills.
·         Knowledge of lesson plans and experience leading activities.
·         Demonstrate good listening and communication skills.
·         Demonstrate organizational and team management skills.
·         Must hold current First Aid and CPR cards by the camp start date (training provided).
·         Must be able to clear TRAILS Registry prior to first day of work.
·         Able to lift or assist in lifting 50 lbs. (Lifting a wheel chair or an individual in and out of their wheel chair.)
 
Working Conditions:
·         80% of the work will be performed at the camp site.
·         20% of the work will be performed at various recreational settings and field trip sites.
·         Camp activity areas include: Arts and Crafts, Sports and Games, Nature and Science, Music and Dance, Drama and Theater, Aquatics and Sensory room.
·         Friday In Camp Fun days occur each week, are themed and scheduled out for 5 groups.
·         Participation in all regular and special activities with the campers where appropriate.
·         Hours will vary each day; 40 hours per week.
·         Changes and adaptation in daily schedule may develop because of weather, transportation, behavior, etc.
·         Staff eat lunch (self-provided) with the campers/other staff.
·         Breaks are worked out with direct supervisor.
 
 
Equipment Used:
·         Various recreational equipment used by the campers. This includes supplies and equipment specific to a specialized area but not exclusive to sports equipment, arts and crafts equipment, and aquatics equipment.
·         Telephone.
·         Variety of specialized equipment essential to the daily life of the campers.
·         City owned or leased vans and busses and their respective equipment.
·         Equipment as required by program area.
