Job Summary

Swim Lesson Instructors are responsible for providing quality swim lesson instruction to all participants participating in our group and private swim lesson programs. It is essential that the Swim Lesson Instructors have complete knowledge and understanding of the different swimming classes offered, the levels, and the skills associated with each level to ensure consistency and quality instruction to our customers. It is also necessary that the Swim Lesson Instructors have thorough knowledge of the overall operations and offerings of the Department.   We pride ourselves on the provision of excellent customer service.  It is imperative that everyone our staff comes in contact with is treated with the utmost courtesy and respect, and that they receive the information they request.  Team members must have positive attitudes and enjoy interfacing with the public.

Swim Lesson Instructors are responsible for teaching lessons in the prescribed curriculum established by the Parks and Recreation Department, enforce facility rules, regulations and policies, maintain a clean, neat and orderly work area, clean up and store equipment after teaching lessons, and completing various reports associated with classes.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Reports to work as scheduled/directed and reports to work free from the effects of illegal drugs or alcohol.  Must not be impaired due to use of prescription drugs.
•   Instruct swim lessons by following established curriculum.
•   Must have thorough knowledge with and able to effectively communicate all programs and activities offered through the Parks and Recreation Department, to citizens and other customers.
• Must have thorough knowledge and understanding of the different swimming classes offered, the levels, and the skills associated with each level.
• Meeting and greeting walk-in members and customers, assisting them and directing them to the proper room or facility.
•   Performs janitorial and maintenance duties as directed.
• Handles customer issues and complaints professionally and in a timely manner
• Transfers participants to appropriate level if they are registered for a class that is above or below their current level and makes sure all paperwork and Recware information is updated to reflect these changes.
• Prepares and maintains reports as associated with the swim lesson program.
• Maintains a clean, neat and orderly work - station.
• Responsible for the enforcement of established facility rules, regulations and policies.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Junior in high school; high school diploma or some college coursework preferred.  Minimum one year experience teaching swim lessons is required; comparable experience (for example several years on a competitive swim team) will be considered on a case by case basis.  Must possess CPR, Emergency First Aid and AED certifications, or have the ability to obtain all of these certifications within forty-five days of employment start date.  Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Certified preferred.  Valid, Texas Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record

Certifications: 

Applicants must possess the following certifications, or have the ability to obtain these certifications within forty-five days of employment start date:

• CPR Certification 
• Emergency First Aid Certification
• Automated External Defibrillator Certification

Colonial Park Recreation Center:  4103 Byron (facility open seasonally)

Monday through Sunday 6:00 a.m. until 10:00p.m. or as needed.

*Other hours may be required based on private lessons, training, meetings, rentals or special events.

West University Recreation Center: 4210 Bellaire Blvd.

* Monday through Sunday 4:45 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. or as needed.
