(Major Job Duties)
Position performs management, administrative and technical work in achieving compliance with the Florida Building Code, Broward County code, Life Safety Code, Federal Flood Regulations, and regulatory standards, and other state and federal promulgated or mandated regulations, codes and ordinances to provide for safety and welfare of the City. Responsibilities include interpretation and enforcement of the applicable codes; planning, assigning, supervising and reviewing the work of all construction service staff. Position provides technical interpretation, advisement, and guidance to building inspection and plans review staff in the more complex aspects of the work. Manages the Building Inspections Permitting Division of the Development Services Department, and provides direct advisement and assistance to the department director.

Minimum of a High school diploma or GED. Certified as required by the State of Florida, Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board as a Building Code Administrator and certification in one or more of the areas listed under Section 104.1.3 of the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals. Requires a valid Florida Driver’s license. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in civil, structural or construction engineering, construction management or architecture is strongly preferred. Florida license as General Contractor and LEED certification is also preferred.
The successful candidate is expected and required to assert the authority of the Building Official to proactively enforce the Florida Building Code, both to new construction and existing development. Actively monitor existing structures for compliance with the Florida Building Code and vigilant to vacate properties that are dilapidated and should not be occupied. The candidate must possess excellent customer service skills and philosophy to promote Pompano Beach as a business friendly environment. The BO will be an active partner in the city’s community and economic development efforts. Applicants should possess administrative and supervisory experience and skills as well as demonstrate proficiency in the utilization and implementation of information technologies such as electronic plan review and digital record keeping. The applicant must be able to engage and monitor field inspectors and to improve the Building Inspections Division customer response times and improve the City’s ISO ratings.
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, and handling, pushing, and pulling. Ability to climb structures under construction.
