Description:

The Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer’s Office invites your application for Agricultural/Standards Specialist I to be part of a multi-billion dollar agricultural industry in Fresno County. Although enforcement of the laws and regulations is part of the Specialist’s duties, the primary purpose and objective of the Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer’s Office is the promotion and protection of the County’s agricultural industry and the general public. In order to accomplish this task, the Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer’s Office is divided into three divisions: Pest Detection and Exclusion; Environmental Protection and Weights and Measures; and Pest Mananagement, Standardization and Crop Statistics.

SAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Conducts agricultural surveys, inspections, and investigations to enforce provisions of the California Food and Agricultural Code, California Code of Regulations, and Fresno County Ordinance Code, relating to the protection of various segments of the County engaged in producing or utilizing agricultural and other plant products, and the provision of weights and measures protective services.
  • Performs pesticide use and field worker safety inspections. Identifies, controls, and eradicates plant diseases, noxious weeds, and vertebrate and insect pest infestations. Performs fruit, vegetable and egg quality inspections.
  • Inspects, tests, seals, or condemns commercial weighing and measuring instruments, in accordance with the California Business and Professions Code, California Code of Regulations, and Fresno County Ordinance Code.
  • Inspects and tests petroleum products such as motor oil, gasoline, and brake fluid to ensure that they are advertised quality.
  • Prepares reports, correspondence, and statistics.
Requirements:

OPTION 1:

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in agricultural, biological, chemical, or physical sciences or any major approved by the Secretary of Agriculture pursuant to the California Food and Agriculture Code Section 2106, that is acceptable within the United States’ accredited college or university system.

OPTION 2:

Education: Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university system that is acceptable within the United States’ accredited college or university system with a minimum of 30 semester units, or equivalent, in one or any combination of the following disciplines: agricultural sciences, biological sciences, chemical sciences, physical sciences, mathematics and/or statistics.

BOTH OPTIONS ALSO REQUIRE:

STATE LICENSE: Possession of one (1) valid license issued by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (a copy of the license is required and may be faxed to the attention of Daniel Her at (559) 455-4788 The license must be held in any one of the following areas.

LICENSE: Possession of a valid driver’s license.

A California Class “A” driver’s license may be required.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Depending upon the number of applicants meeting the minimum qualifications and filing requirements, applicants may be scheduled for one of the processes listed below:

  • Written Exam (weighted 100%).
  • Oral Examination (weighted 100%). An oral examination includes a panel consisting of at least two members within a similar field of expertise as the vacancy. Candidates are asked structured questions and must respond orally to allow the panel to evaluate the specific qualifications of each applicant.

Successful candidates will be placed on an employment list effective for a minimum of 3 months (may be extended up to an additional 12 months), and will be certified in final rank order as vacancies occur.
