||Des Moines Fire Department
Protect life, property, and the environment from fire; provide specialized rescue and emergency medical services; contain and control the accidental or illegal intentional release of hazardous materials; perform fire code compliance inspections (company level) and deliver community education programs; operate and perform general maintenance on specialized fire department apparatus and equipment; maintain and enhance skills by participating in drills and training sessions, and clean and maintain fire department facilities.
Additional compensation: 5% paramedic pay after obtaining Paramedic certification and successful completion of probationary period.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent by the application deadline date.
REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
ON OR BEFORE APPLICATION CLOSING DATE (JUNE 14, 2013): 21 years of age and possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license. PRIOR TO GRADUATION FROM TRAINING ACADEMY: Possession of Firefighter I and Firefighter II certifications, and a Class D driver’s license.
WITHIN 24 MONTHS OF APPOINTMENT: Emergency Medical Technician paramedic-level certification recognized by the State of Iowa.
CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT: Possession and maintenance of the appropriate Emergency Medical Technician certification, Firefighter I and Firefighter II certification, and a Class D driver’s license are conditions of continued employment. Failure to obtain and maintain required license and certifications might subject the employee to immediate termination.
All appointments will be conditional upon passing the background and reference checks and medical and physical fitness exams required by the State of Iowa. The medical exam includes a screening for drug use.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Fire fighters perform a full range of duties preventing and suppressing fires, providing emergency medical services, responding to hazardous materials incidents, performing other duties necessary to preserve life and property, and other related work as assigned.
SELECTION METHOD All candidates meeting the minimum requirements will be invited to participate in the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT). Applicants passing the CPAT will take a written examination. Passing score on the written exam is 70%. Passing the written exam does not guarantee that an applicant will proceed in the process. The Civil Service Commission will decide the number of applicants to proceed to oral exams based on the highest written exam scores of those applicants who pass the background investigation. SCORING: 50% of Written Exam Score + 50% of Oral Exam Score = Final Score + Veteran's Preference Points = Total Score. The total score is used for ranking to create the list of top 40 and ties.
