One year of experience performing maintenance construction work involving the operation of light and heavy construction and maintenance equipment; training equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade is required. Must be trained and certified in the following areas in a reasonable amount of time after appointment: traffic control, CPR, and first aid. Prior experience running a compost facility operation is desirable. MUST HAVE a Class "B" Utah CDL or be able to obtain one within 90 days of hiring. Scheduling of work hours is subject to change at the discretion of the Division. Work hours may include some holidays and Saturdays. Work requires travel from site to site; some exposure to dust and noise; some heavy lifting, standing, climbing; and, work in inclement weather conditions. Physical Requirements: Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following: lifting heavy objects, climbing in and out of equipment or trenches approximately 10 feet in height, walking or standing for extended periods of time, and operating assigned equipment.
Knowledge of: Operation and maintenance requirements of power-driven and electrical equipment including but not limited to Front-end loaders; practices, methods, and materials used in general construction and maintenance work; traffic laws, ordinances, and rules applicable to heavy equipment operations; construction occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Ability to: Perform skilled maintenance, construction and repair work in the area of work assigned; operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner; performs a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and unfavorable weather conditions; perform heavy manual labor; work independently in the absence of immediate supervision; understand and follow oral and written instruction; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include walking or standing for extended periods of time, operating assigned equipment; maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, operating assigned equipment and vehicles; maintain mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communication with others. Maintain a professional and courteous attitude towards customers and coworkers.
Essential Functions: Receives general supervision from the Solid Waste Maintenance Supervisor or Foreman. May exercise functional and technical supervision over lower level maintenance staff. Will perform the duties as crew leader responsible for the work of one or two temporary employees. Accomplish a variety of Public Works activities including but not limited to street maintenance and repair, solid waste collection and disposal, and snow-ice control.
Primarily, will operate a loader ,Chain Saw & log splitter; however, will occasionally be assigned to operate garbage collection trucks. Operate and maintain construction equipment such as Sewer Hydro-Cleaners, power sweepers, dump trucks, front-end loaders, steel wheel roller, patch truck, salt/sand truck, snow plow, salt-sand trucks, and various other equipment for a variety of maintenance and construction operations; clean debris from catch basins, detention ponds, gutters, ditches, culverts and creek beds; bulldoze hill sides and fire trails as required; perform specialized construction and maintenance tasks such as chip sealing, spreading asphalt, jack hammering, mowing lawn, flushing streets, plowing snow and a variety of minor maintenance activities; identify equipment needs for each assigned project; pick up and deliver equipment from construction sites; install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of street repair activities; direct and control traffic around work sites; perform snow and ice control duties as required; be available and physically/mentally capable of working up to 15 hours at a time; be available for recall, during any hour, for snow/ice control work; be available for other duties or emergency response at any time; perform preventive maintenance on equipment as required; respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
