The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned:
- Operates and maintains irrigation systems including Rainbird Maxicom, Calsense, WeatherTrak and AquaConserve controllers. Enters data and prepares irrigation reports. Programs irrigation controllers.
- Oversee landscape contractors' performance. Assists in bidding, procurement and billing processes. Directs the use of contract services to accomplish assigned functions; plans and inspects contractor projects.
- Diagnoses, repairs, replaces, and installs irrigation systems and components, including controllers, wiring and connections, mainlines, control valves, master valves and water pressure regulators.
- Operates wire and voltage locator equipment and locates underground wiring problems. Operates remote control equipment to check irrigation systems.
- Operates a variety of small and large equipment including chain saws, mowers and tractors.
- Designs, estimates, coordinates and implements basic irrigation system installations and modifications. Tests, repairs and replaces irrigation system cross connection devices to conform to state and county requirements.
- Locates and marks irrigation utilities for Underground Service Alert.
- Performs landscape development plan checks/reviews.
- May perform emergency repairs and may be required to be on 24-hour emergency response (standby) or respond to emergency call outside regular working hours.
- May work a variety of changing shifts in order to meet the maintenance needs of the Department.
- Purchases supplies, materials and equipment and maintains paper and computerized inventory and records.
- Responds to landscape requests and inquiries from the general public.
- Uses a computer to perform job related tasks, and to input and maintain records.
- Assists less experienced personnel.
- Performs other duties as required.
High school diploma or equivalent with technical training in landscape maintenance, water management, or irrigation design and/or troubleshooting and maintenance and four years specialized landscape maintenance experience, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Class B license with a tanker endorsement may be required.
Possession of a Rainbird Maxicom Operator I license and/or an Orange County Backflow Prevention license may be required.
Previous experience managing centralized irrigation systems, working in commercial, municipal or institutional organizations, and managing the work of contractors is highly desirable.

The mission of the Public Works Department is to develop, build, and maintain public infrastructure by effectively administering and managing the design, engineering, construction, environmental regulations, and maintenance of City-owned streets, transportation systems, landscape, and other assets. This dynamic department operates on an annual operating budget of approximately $42 million excluding Capital Improvement Projects and employs 122 full time staff members.
The Department is composed of nine divisions cooperating to create a highly effective team. The divisions include Administration, Transit Services, Signal Operations & Maintenance, Project Management, Transportation Planning & Project Development, Development Engineering, Streets, Right-of-Way Maintenance, Landscape Maintenance, and Fleet Services. Together these divisions provide essential services designed to meet City Strategic Business Plan goals.
