The Public Works Inspector/Capital Projects position performs inspections of permitted and city contracted construction capital projects to ensure conformance with plans, specifications, standards, laws and regulations and performs a full range of complex tasks relative to this area of responsibility. This is a skilled journey-level class that requires independence of action, judgment, and discretion in interpreting plans and specifications and enforcing local, state, and federal construction regulations.
The City of Torrance is looking to fill two openings for this exciting opportunity. It is unique from that of the Public Works Inspector in that it is primarily responsible for the inspection of Capital Projects, has a greater depth of knowledge and ability regarding construction materials and methods, and greater experience in managing complex capital construction projects.
Special Requirements: This position requires a 5 day/40 hour (5/8) work schedule. Must be willing to travel and be available to respond during off duty hours to coincide with project construction hours.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
- Equivalent to graduation from high school, preferably supplemented by vocation/college coursework related to this field and
- Three years of responsible experience in engineering/public works inspection.
- Valid California driver license
- Certified Qualified Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) Practitioner (QSP)
In addition to the minimum requirements, the SUCCESSFUL candidate will possess the following characteristics:
- Highly organized and self-motivated.
- Develops and maintains a positive working relationship with management, staff, the public, contractors, utility companies, and public agencies.
- Has prior experience with performing inspection duties on public works projects that include specific additional duties related to the use of federal and/or state funds.
