GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB: Under direct supervision, operates Solid Waste Refuse Trucks and other heavy equipment and performs manual work functions associated with Solid Waste Department activities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Operates a variety of equipment and machinery used in department projects and activities, which may include all track equipment, dump truck (16,000gvw), backhoe, rubber-tired backhoe, rubber-tired loader, bucket truck, sanitation truck (front-end, rear, or automated side loader), trash truck, dump truck (1 ton), pickup truck, transfer station controls, tub grinder, tractor mower, bush hog, bobcat, weedeater, leaf machine, chipper, chain saw, shovel, rake, pitch fork, broom, mechanic’s tools, and radio communications equipment;
Performs various tasks associated with solid waste operations in adherence with applicable city, county and state codes, which may include collecting garbage from residences and businesses each day, unloading garbage trucks at transfer station, inspecting trucks before/after each load, sweeps/cleans ramps, preparing/utilizing chemicals and insecticides, lifting discarded appliances and furniture, and picking up trash/debris;
Performs various manual tasks associated with department activities, which may include, shoveling materials, loading/unloading materials, lifting/moving heavy materials, and picking up debris/litter;
Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fuel levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning building and work areas;
Monitors equipment operations to maintain safety and efficiency; reports faulty equipment;
Performs daily preventive maintenance, checking water, oil, tires, lights, brakes, gear, levers to ensure proper operation; notifies fleet maintenance when necessary;
Checks availability of required supplies and equipment; initiates requests for new or replacement materials;
Prepares or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, logs, and other documents;
Receives various forms, reports, work orders, maps, manuals, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
