Position Description The Transportation Operations Division of the Seattle Department of Transportation presents an exceptional opportunity to join a highly successful Signal Maintenance team to help build and maintain the largest inventory of municipal traffic signals in the State of Washington. Under the general supervision of the Traffic Signal Crew Chief, this position will install, maintain, and modify the City of Seattle's traffic signal and ITS system. Candidates should be highly motivated, well rounded, and knowledgeable in electrical and controls principals. This recruitment will be used to fill multiple positions within the Signal Maintenance team. Job Responsibilities Install, repair, and maintain traffic signal systems and other related electrical and overhead systems, detection systems, communication networks including fiber optic, CCTV cameras, dynamic message signs, overhead signs, flashing devices, support systems (including poles, mast arms and spans) and ITS systems Implement work plans and perform technical work to ensure compliance with electrical codes, City specifications and standards, and State safety laws Identify and diagnose maintenance and repair needs and recommend corrective action to the Crew Chief; submit requests and specifications for equipment and supplies Respond to emergency signal malfunctions, and customer service requests and inquiries regarding traffic signals Participate in required training Install, maintain, and repair traffic signal systems including wiring, conduits, traffic signal hardware, intersection controllers, intersection cabinets and their associated components and peripheries, and vehicle and pedestrian detection systems Operate and maintain various electronic measuring and testing devices, to troubleshoot and repair signals, signal components and related signal equipment Perform bench work including testing, fault finding and repair of all equipment associated with traffic signal equipment or ITS related devices, repair or replace components as necessary May provide training to other Traffic Signal Electricians on specialized electrical and electronic components, software, or equipment associated with traffic operations Prepare and maintain accurate reports and records Support department goals in promoting diversity and social justice These responsibilities are only a summary of typical functions of the job and are not intended to be an exhaustive or comprehensive list of all possible job responsibilities, tasks, and duties. Qualifications Required Qualifications : Three years of electrical or electronic experience at the journey-level installing, maintaining, and calibrating control or measuring devices comprised of solid state electronic or computer systems in the signal trade or equivalent combination of related education and experience. Ability to effectively work in a multicultural workplace with a diverse customer base. Other combinations of education, training, and/or experience that provide an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class may be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability. Required Certifications/Licenses : Certification as an IMSA Level II Traffic Signal Electrician, or the ability to obtain this certification within 12 months of hire date and maintain throughout employment. Current Washington State driver's license with a combination endorsement. Must submit a complete driving record on request. May also require appropriate crane certification as required by law. Desired Qualifications : Demonstrated responsibility for traffic signal maintenance capacity to include installing and repairing various types of traffic signal control systems Current experience in the Traffic Signal Maintenance or Construction field, especially as a foreman or on-site lead worker Licensed as a Washington State Journeyman Electrician (ELO1) Class A CDL Endorsement Experience constructing traffic signals in the City of Seattle Experience in bench traffic signal controller construction and installation Experience as electronics technician or industrial control technician Extensive knowledge of transportation standards (MUTCD, NEMA, IMSA, etc.) and electrical codes (NEC, NESC, etc.) Multilingual Work Environment/Physical Demands : Must be willing and able to work in all weather, under adverse conditions including noise, fumes, moving vehicles, and in confined spaces and at heights around energized and high voltage equipment. Required to be on call for emergency situations. Must stand and walk (on level and uneven surfaces), bend, and kneel for extended periods of time. Requires lifting in excess of 50 pounds.
