Job Summary The Greenville Recreation and Parks Department is currently recruiting River Park North Summer Camp Counselors to provide daily guidance for 10-12 campers. This position would lead the group through daily outdoor/nature experiences, and other duties as assigned. Previous experience in a summer camp setting is helpful. Minimum Age: 18 years old (as of May 14, 2024) Pay Rate: $12.00 to $15.00 per hour Hours: Vary by camp Camps run from June 10 to August 2, 2024 All staff are expected to attend mandatory training on the dates listed below: May 14, 2024 May 16, 2024 May 21, 2024 May 23, 2024 May 28, 2024 River Park North Summer Camp Counselors will lead each of the following age groups: Junior Explorers - 7 weeks 4 to 6 year old's Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday - Friday Junior Nature Scientists Camp - 1 week 4 to 7 year old's Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday - Wednesday Nature Explorers - 4 weeks 7 to 8 year old's Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday - Thursday Counselors for this age group will also stay overnight each Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 a.m. the next morning. Outdoor Skills Challenge - 3 weeks 9 to 13 year old's Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday - Thursday Counselors for this age group will also stay overnight each Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 a.m. the next morning. Outdoor Awareness Camp - 1 week 8 to 13 year old's Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday - Wednesday Counselors for this age group will also stay overnight each Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 a.m. the next morning. Minimum Qualifications Previous experience interacting with children or teens (paid or volunteer), such as in a school, camp, daycare, or recreational setting. Camping, boating, canoeing, fishing, hiking, and nature games experience. Must have above average knowledge of area wildlife. Must not be afraid of or apprehensive about handling snakes, turtles and other small forms of fauna. Knowledge of: promoting good conduct and acting as a role model for campers. presenting a mature professional demeanor. Skilled in: working in a team environment. Ability to: maintain effective and courteous working relationships with campers, parents, employees, community organization partners, and the general public. understand and abide by Greenville Recreation and Parks Department policies and procedures. understand and follow oral and written instructions. Special Requirements Must possess a valid driver's license issued by N.C. or another state. Valid CPR and First Aid/AED certifications are required prior to the start of camp. Description CAMP COUNSELOR (CASUAL/CASUAL SEASONAL) (Recreation Assistant Job Code: 9325 Hours : Casual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty-five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). POSITION SUMMARY Under general supervision, is responsible for coordination and supervision of staff and volunteers to ensure age-appropriate curriculum and activities are met related to the daily operation of a District program in order to ensure the safety and well-being of participants and perform related work as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Incumbents in this class are primarily responsible for day-to-day operations of camp, conducting and analyzing assessment surveys, and is responsible for assisting in managing budgets. This class can be distinguished from the class of Head Counselor because incumbents in this class are responsible for the overall direction and staffing of the recreation program. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Incumbents may not perform all duties. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Assist with the developing meaningful training to prepare staff and volunteers for their role as leaders Responsible for day-to-day operations of camp including camp planning of activities, field trips, scheduling staff, parent communications, and opening and closing of camp Provide superior customer service experience to campers, families and volunteers including returning phone calls in a timely manner and communication via email Facilitate safe and positive recreation experiences; ensure a safe environment; assess and minimizes risks; assess and respond to potential injuries and prepare incident reports. Maintain accurate attendance and complete required records; maintain appropriate confidential records. Fill out incident reports as needed and manage any behavioral contracts when appropriate. Manage the storage and inventory of equipment and supplies. Participate in meeting and training sessions. Maintain good public relations. WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential duties and responsibilities of this position.
