The Virginia Railway Express, headquartered just outside the nation’s capital in Alexandria, Virginia and providing commuter rail service to over 4.5 million riders annually, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Chief Financial Officer.
The Virginia Railway Express is owned by the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission and the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission. Certain functions have been delegated to the VRE Operations Board, which consists of representatives of the two Commissions and the Commonwealth of Virginia. VRE is managed by the Chief Executive Officer, who reports to the Operations Board and Commissions. The Chief Financial Officer is responsible for collaborating with and directing a competent staff in the areas of finance, budget, accounting, purchasing and human resources.
The salary for the position is negotiable dependent upon candidate education and experience, and is aligned with the cost-of-living in the Washington DC metropolitan area. Minimum requirements for the position include a bachelor’s degree in finance, business or public administration or related field and possess at least 10 years of progressively responsible management experience in a transportation or government agency. It is necessary that candidates hold extensive knowledge of complex finance operations, with transit or transportation finance experience strongly desired. Candidates should possess in depth knowledge and experience working with automated financial management software and generally accepted principles and practices of accounting including GASB and FASB. Licensure as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is preferred; however, a master’s degree in a related field will be considered.
