(Restricted to permanent employees of the Internal Services Department who have successfully completed their initial probationary period.)

Current employees in the unclassified service who meet the following criteria also qualify to participate in this exam: Unclassified employees who have attained permanent County status on a classified position by successful completion of the initial probationary period, with no break in service since leaving the classified service. Full-time employees in the unclassified service with at least six months of full-time experience in the unclassified service at the time of filing or by the last day of filing.

DEFINITION:
Heads a sheet metal section comprised of not more than seven journey-level and sub-journey-level positions where no higher level supervisor in the craft is present; or under the direction of a higher level sheet metal supervisor, supervises and participates in the work of a crew of five or more positions of journey-level and sub-journey-level; or is first assistant to a higher level supervisor in charge of a sheet metal section.

CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:
Positions allocable to this class heads a sheet metal section comprised of not more than seven journey-level and sub-journey-level positions, or reports to a Sheet Metal Supervisor or other craft supervisor or manager and supervises and participates in the work of a sheet metal section comprised of five or more journey-level and sub-journey-level sheet metal workers in the installation, fabrication, assembly and repair of sheet metal articles and equipment. Incumbents must have a thorough technical knowledge of the sheet metal operations performed by subordinates and have the ability to exercise the basic principles of supervision.

Essential Job Functions

Plans, assigns, supervises and inspects the work of sheet metal workers, other skilled craft workers, apprentices and helpers in the installation, fabrication, assembly and repair of sheet metal articles and equipment.

Makes rough sketches showing material, gauges and dimensions.

Lays out jobs and estimates labor and material requirements.

Makes periodic inspections of existing sheet metal equipment and systems.

Inspects, on delivery, sheet metal work supplied by outside contractors.

Determines work methods and types of materials to be used.

Orders and maintains stock of materials and supplies.

Ensures that code requirements, safety regulations and safe work practices are observed.

Supervises the maintenance of tools and equipment.

Maintains work records.

Performs the work of a journey-level sheet metal worker.

Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites in order to transport the necessary tools, equipment, and materials required to perform the job.

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Two years' journey-level experience* in sheet metal work in the building trades.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
*Journey level experience is defined as possessing the required knowledge, skills and training to perform a full-range and diversity of work independently. Persons at this level operate with fairly significant freedom from day-to-day supervision and need little or no guidance on such matters as selecting appropriate problem-solving methods and techniques, locating appropriate regulations, or applying proper procedures to carry out work.

Verification of Experience Letter (VOEL) WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED for this examination. VOEL previously submitted for other examinations will also not be considered.

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related functions.

Successful applicants for this position will be required to obtain a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles . A copy of your driving record must be presented at the time of appointment. License must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked. AN APPLICANT WHOSE DRIVING RECORD SHOWS FOUR OR MORE MOVING VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE LAST TWO YEARS WILL NOT BE APPOINTED.

PHYSICAL CLASS:
3 - Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10 - 25 pounds.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience in leading/supervising Sheet Metal Workers in the installation, fabrication, assembly and repair of sheet metal articles and/or equipment projects.
  • Experience utilizing Microsoft Office software and/or Automated Project Tracking (APT) in the operation of a personal computer.

EXAMINATION CONTENT:
This examination consists of two (2) parts:
Part I: An interview covering training, experience, personal fitness, and the general ability to perform the duties of the position, weighted 50%. You must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher to advance to Part II of this examination.

Part II: An Appraisal of Promotability (AP) evaluating Knowledge and Skills, Analytical and Problem Solving Skills, Work Habits and Productivity Skills, Customer Service and Interpersonal Skills, Written and Oral Communication Skills, and Supervision, weighted 50%.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on each weighted part of the examination in order to be placed on the Eligible List.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

PASSING THIS EXAMINATION AND BEING PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE LIST DO NOT GUARANTEE AN OFFER OF EMPLOYMENT.

SPECIAL INFORMATION:
A thorough background investigation (including fingerprint search and reference verification) will be required of candidates. Candidates who are found to be unsuitable for employment as a Sheet Metal Working Supervisor will be removed from the certification list pursuant to Civil Service Rule 6.04.

DISQUALIFYING FACTORS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
  • Felony convictions.
  • Certain job-related misdemeanor convictions.
  • Certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (e.g. 4 or more moving violations within the past 2 years, failure to appear, at-fault accidents and driving under the influence).
  • Illegal use of certain controlled substances.
  • Poor employment history.
