OVERVIEW The Attorney II classification is the second level in a four-level Attorney classification series used for civil, criminal prosecution and indigent defense positions. The Attorney II classification is distinguished from Attorney I by the greater complexity of the nature of cases and assignments and by close to moderate supervision, direction and/or assistance from higher level attorneys than Attorney I. Positions functioning at this level whether civil, criminal, or defense require prior case preparation and/or trial experience at a level equivalent to Attorney 1. A higher level attorney is available for professional guidance and counseling on a case by case basis on unusual or difficult problems. Provide legal advice to law enforcement; work with law officers, citizens, and witnesses to aid in the investigation of crime; direct the preparation and presentation of cases. Job Description and Duties California state agencies manage our air, water, wildlife, forests and other natural resources, and when those agencies need advice or are in court, they turn to the Natural Resources Law Section for legal representation. We are looking for a bright, energetic attorney to join our section to help further our client agencies’ missions of protecting and fairly managing our state’s natural resources. You will be asked to advise and represent state agencies including the Air Resources Board, the State Water Resources Control Board and the nine regional water quality control boards, the Department of Water Resources, the Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Fish and Game Commission, CAL FIRE and the Board of Forestry, and the Department of Food & Agriculture, among others. Attorneys in the section will typically handle cases involving air pollution, water rights and water supply, water quality, CEQA, endangered species, wildfire cost recovery, and timber harvest plans, as well as business and corporate issues. The position’s duties include representing state agencies in litigation matters from soup to nuts: from providing pre-litigation advice, to every aspect of pre-trial and trial litigation, to appeals all the way to the US Supreme Court. Maintains and/or manages multiple case management and other court technology systems, logs, and records; may prepare reports and/or other legal documents using a computer; reviews such reports and/or documents for accuracy and makes corrections as required. Processes incoming motions, discovery requests and other confidential and time sensitive documents. Reviews files for next day court proceedings; assures that all information is updated and that defendant has complied with previous court orders. Reviews legal or court documents, arrest or incident reports, files and cases to identify inaccurate, inconsistent and unclear codes, data and other information; notifies appropriate staff and participates in problem resolution; checks court and legal documents for proper authorization; obtains missing signatures or refers to appropriate staff for completion. Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the team's service by offering suggestions and participating in team activity. Acts as receptionist and receives and screens visitors and telephone calls and directs the caller to the proper person or personally handles the call; operates standard office equipment. May provide assistance to other teams or serve as back-up to other DA Team Clerks as necessary. May train others in work procedures or direct the work of others on a project or relief basis.
