JOB SUMMARY: Maintain, program, repair, install and test traffic signal systems, communications, and control devices citywide. The salary range for this position is $30.05- $42.07 per hour with a hiring range of $30.05 - $36.06 , depending on qualifications and experience. Position will close to applicants on: Friday, 4/26/24 at 12:00 P.M. M.S.T. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Perform all duties of the Traffic Signal Tech I. Inspect installations and maintenance of traffic signals, school zones, rapid flashing beacons, roadway weather information system (RWIS) components and subsystems. Repair, program, install, construct, and maintain Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) components, traffic signal communications, video systems and subsystems. Program and operate central traffic signal computer. Monitor and operate the central traffic signal system and subsystems from the Traffic Operations Center (TOC). Work includes remote monitoring and adjusting performance in response to planned and unplanned traffic incidents. Test and replace or repair subsystem components using laptop computers and other test equipment. Work includes systems and subsystems and all field equipment such as signal cabinets, signal poles/mast arms, and signal heads. Investigate ITS components and recommend new equipment and system improvements. Assist in developing signal equipment standards and assist with purchasing of parts. Install, operate test and repair ITS electronic systems, components, and make necessary adjustments and repairs. OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS: Work on a pavement marking crew, sign installations, and traffic counts. Act as Traffic Operations Superintendent in their absence. Mentor apprentices. QUALIFICATIONS: Required Education: High School Graduate or GED. Required Experience: 4 years ITS and traffic signal maintenance, construction, or repair experience. A two-year technical degree in electronics, computers or a similar field may substitute for two (2) years of required experience. Certifications: Must possess a valid Class B commercial driver's license (CDL). Must possess International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level II Signs and Markings Certification, and Level II Traffic Signals with Electronics and/or Electrician Certification. Must possess International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control Technician or American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATTSA) Traffic Control Technician and Traffic Control Supervisor certification within one (1) year of hire. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Ability to set up and inspect safe work zones under heavy traffic conditions. Knowledge and ability to operate personal computers, electronic test equipment, aerial lift trucks, hand tools, underground locating equipment, and forklift trucks for installation, repairs, and maintenance. Ability to work in the field under all types of weather conditions. Ability to operate dump trucks with snow plows for storm fighting/snow plowing operations as needed. PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING CONDITIONS: Frequent l ight to moderate physical effort that includes frequent standing or walking or maintaining arms and hands in the same position for repetitive tasks. Frequently works with light objects and light hand tools. Frequent exposure to heat and noise along with working outside in the elements. Occasional exposure to hazards that are predictable or well protected against. Considered essential personnel required to report for duty as directed in response to community emergencies (e.g. natural disaster, fire, flood, blizzard, etc.). Field, equipment operation, signal shop and office type work. Fieldwork during inclement weather conditions in conjunction with high speed, heavy volume traffic areas is to be expected. Office and shop work includes Traffic Operations Center (TOC) monitoring of systems, central computer and other ITS components’ computers and system programming, operations and installation, component testing/ troubleshooting/repair work in a shop environment and in the field. Ability to occasionally lift heavy objects up to 100 lbs. and repetitive lifting of heavy objects of up to 50 lbs will be required. Operation of bucket trucks, dump trucks w/snow plows, forklifts, underground locate equipment, and various power and hand tools. Serve on call duty and incidents scheduled and unscheduled, and must arrive for emergency call outs to 105 West 5 th Street within 30 minutes of call.
