Essential Job Functions
AnEngineeringGeologistis responsible for performing a combination of the following essential job functions: conducts geological engineering investigations and supervises the preparation of investigative reports relative to existing and potential geologic hazards encountered in site selection, design, construction, and maintenance of all types of civil engineering structures; performs and evaluates site investigations related to hydrogeologic conditions, groundwater supply, solid waste disposal and hazardous waste disposal; provides technical direction to subordinates. Oversees and directs contract consultants carrying out field investigations, mapping assignments, and empirical and analytical analysis of geological conditions; reviews, evaluates, and field checks plans for subdivisions, grading, and building plans and correlates these with geological studies and investigations to ensure geological hazards such as landslides, settlement, or earthquake faults are identified and adequate measures aretaken to eliminate such hazards; conducts grading inspections of single lots and tract developments to determine if unsafe geological conditions have been exposed during grading and if remedial designs are required to overcome such conditions; provides technical review and approval of detailed engineering geologic investigations conducted by Professional Geologists for subdivisions and single lot sites; conducts meetings, discussions, and other communications with geologic consultants, land developers, Civil Engineers, Soil Engineers, and others involved in land-use or land development within the County; determines the requirements for exploratory techniques necessary to best identify existing geological conditions and to recommend specific corrective action in the study of public works sites; conducts research in the fields of engineering geology, rock mechanics, seismology, geophysics, and soil mechanics for the development of new technology, procedures, and knowledge; prepares and analyzes cost estimates for geologic investigations; evaluates and analyzes geological data derived from subsurface exploration and recommends changes to cut slope angles, roadway realignment, changes in grade, and the spacing of benches for maximum stability of roads traversing hilly terrain; and field checks residential lots and subdivisions for locations of buttresses, retaining walls and sub-drains, and general geological structure in cuts to ensure these conform to submitted grading plans and to verify the geological structures in the area of these improvements are as originally anticipated.

Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
A valid California State Certificate of Registration as an Engineering Geologist.*

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

PHYSICAL CLASS:
Physical Class III - Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:

EXAMINATION CONTENT
This examination will consist of an interview covering education, training, experience, work style, and general ability to perform duties of the position weighted 100%.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the interview in order to be placed on the eligible register.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

NO PERSON MAY COMPETE FOR THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.
