Qualification Guidelines A typical way to obtain the requisite knowledge and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of this classification is as follows: EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school or its equivalent. Specialized training in police science, handling animals, or a related field is highly desirable. Minimum of two years of experience in the care and handling of animals and dealing with the public. One (1) year of field experience as an Animal Control Officer is desirable. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the desired knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform essential functions may also be considered. LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATE: Possession of a valid California Driver's License. Revocation of license during employment may result in disciplinary action or reassignment. Successful completion of the Animal Law Enforcement Training Academy (Basic) is required by the end of the probationary period.
