General Purpose Under general supervision, oversees and maintains the horticultural resources of Fresno City College (FCC) including the botanical garden, greenhouse and koi pond; conducts walking tours of the garden and tree collection for the public and student groups; provides instructional assistance to faculty and students in biology, botany and adaptive horticulture courses of study; and performs related duties as assigned. Essential Duties & Responsibilities The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Oversees and maintains FCC's horticultural resources including the botanical garden, greenhouse and koi pond; performs and oversees maintenance and care of the botanical gardens and plant collections including native plant and cactus collections; cleans and makes changes in the gardens, propagating plants from cuttings to add to the collection; prunes, weeds and waters; follows specialized watering schedules for the cactus collection; monitors pest infestations and applies herbicides; pots and prepares plant specimens for decorative purposes at presentations and special events. Maintains the koi pond and koi collection; follows feeding schedules; cleans, maintains and performs minor repairs on pump, skimmer and filter; confers with community experts to diagnosis and resolve any unusual issues with the koi collection. Prepares, sets up and performs demonstrations of biology and botany principles such as photosynthesis, plant propagation, plant types and others; prepares biological specimens for classroom use; prepares flora and fauna displays for use in plant identification; responds to student questions regarding concepts, methods and techniques; provides clear and concise explanations and demonstrations to facilitate student understanding and reinforce instructor teaching; assists faculty and students during greenhouse-based laboratory activities; monitors students as they receive hands-on learning in the greenhouse and botanical gardens. Demonstrates the proper and safe use of laboratory equipment and the proper use, storage and disposal of pesticides, chemicals and other hazardous materials; maintains and updates Materials Safety Data Sheet notebooks as required by law; maintains accident report guidance documents and files of accident reports; arranges for pickup of hazardous waste. Stocks and replenishes an inventory of materials and consumables; tracks supplies usage; prepares purchase requisitions to ensure sufficient materials for laboratory, greenhouse and botanic gardens use; arranges for major repair or replacement of tools and equipment. Job No: 514960; 09/15/2022 IRRIGATION SPECIALIST Grounds Department Salary Range : $3721- $6071/Monthly Work Schedule : Full-Time, Monday - Friday, 5:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.; non-exempt classification. Essential Functions : Under the general supervision of the Grounds Manager or designee, the Irrigation Specialist maintains and repairs grounds irrigation systems including modification of existing systems and the planning, cost estimating, and installation of new systems. The Irrigation Specialist performs specialized work on irrigation systems in grounds areas. The Irrigation Specialist typically performs work involving some or all of the following duties: repair broken sprinkler lines, sprinkler heads, valves, and related equipment; clears blockages from valves and pipes; inspects, services, maintains, and repairs automatic sprinkler control devices; performs minor repairs on sprinkler control devices; establishes and maintains sprinkler system preventive maintenance programs; plans irrigation systems, selects types of irrigation equipment, estimates costs, and installs or modifies sprinkler systems; reviews landscaped areas and coordinates the installation of new sprinkler systems and the modification of existing sprinkler systems, taking into consideration the vegetation, soil conditions, and evaporation and water retention factors. Required Qualifications & Experience: Two years of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or general grounds, with one year in the maintenance, repair, or modification of irrigation systems and irrigation equipment. Thorough knowledge of: the soil conditions of various areas of the campus; climate of the area in which the campus is located; and the mechanical principles of sprinkler equipment. General knowledge of the kinds of sprinkler control devices and irrigation equipment available on the market. Ability to plan, estimate costs, and install or modify irrigation systems for sections of the campus; repair and maintain existing irrigation systems; operate equipment, such as small trench-diggers; provide lead work direction to others; and read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position. Incumbent must possess a valid California Driver's License. Demonstrated interest and ability to work in a multicultural/multiethnic environment.
