DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Recreation Leader I This is the entry level class in the Recreation Leader series. This class is distinguished from the Recreation Leader II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience. Recreation Leader II This is the second level class within the Recreation Leader series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Recreation Leader I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned and by the level of experience attained. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Incumbents at this level may oversee the work of lower-level recreation staff. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Recreation Leader I This is the entry level class in the Recreation Leader series. This class is distinguished from the Recreation Leader II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience. Recreation Leader II This is the second level class within the Recreation Leader series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Recreation Leader I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned and by the level of experience attained. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed with program planning time and program oversite time. This position is normally filled by advancement from the I/II level or based on prior experience. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Recreation Leader I Receives immediate supervision from higher level supervisory staff. Recreation Leader II Receives general supervision from higher level supervisory staff and lead direction from Recreation Leader III. May exercise functional or technical supervision over lower-level staff. Essential Functions Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Recreation Leader I: Assist staff in implementing various recreational activities, including but not limited to sports leagues, children and adult programs, and citywide special events. Lead games and crafts; supervise children; enforce safety rules and guidelines. Assist in creating displays and advertisements for events. Respond to and resolve parent, school or community concerns and issues; interact with customers during special events and activities; direct to higher level staff, as necessary. Assist with community events, general programs, and facility rentals; sets up and takes down tables, chairs, and equipment for classes, activities, events, and meetings. Provide basic facility maintenance. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. Recreation Leader II: Includes all duties listed for Recreation Leader I. Collect fees for various activities; receive and process payments; operate the cash register input data into the computer; and provide receipts; balance and reconcile cash drawer. Assist in planning and conducting community events, general programs, and facility rentals; sets up and takes down tables, chairs, and equipment for classes, activities, events, and meetings. Typical Qualifications Recreation Leader I Knowledge of : Rules and regulations of various sports activities. Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment. Basic mathematical principles. English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Basic first aid. Ability to : Learn recreation activities, rules, and regulations. Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public. Recreation Leader II In addition to the qualifications for Recreation Leader I: Knowledge of : General recreation principles and practices. Basic first aid and CPR. Techniques of various arts and crafts. Principles and procedures of record keeping. Ability to : Oversee the work of lower-level staff. Maintain accurate records. Work independently in the absence of supervision. Supplemental Information Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Recreation Leader I Experience : No experience is required. Training : Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Special Requirements: Must be at least 16 years of age and be able to provide a work permit if you have not completed high school or the equivalent and are under age 18. Recreation Leader II In addition to the qualifications for Recreation Leader I: Experience: Increasingly responsible recreational or cultural program implementation experience. Each part-time employee will be enrolled in a 457 PTS Deferred Compensation plan based upon 7.5% of gross pay with costs being shared equally by the employee and the City. Beginning January 1, 2024, part-time employees will be provided 40 hours of paid sick leave each year. Description The Department: The Parks Division provides planning, development, operation, maintenance, and rehabilitation of City parks and open spaces. The Recreation Division provides classes and programs for all ages and abilities. We aim to promote the use of safe, clean, and attractive facilities for enjoyment and quality of life for all ages and abilities. The Cemetery Division maintains 33,000 internment sites in a peaceful public park. The Position: Recreation Leader I The Recreation Leader I is an entry level classification in the Recreation Leader series designed for high school students whose skill level in several broad types of recreational activities is sufficient to assume responsibility for an entire recreation program or area. Under immediate supervision, an incumbent is responsible for the promotion, organization, and leadership of a variety of recreation activities. The Recreation Leader I is distinguished from the Recreation Leader II in that the latter is designed for college level students. The Recreation Leader II will supervise children, youth, teens, and other program participants in many facilities, including but not limited to the Reed & Grant Sports Park, Youth Soccer Park, Youth Activity Center & Teen Center, and Community Recreation Center. In this role, the successful incumbents will help conduct health and safety checks, open/closing facilities, serve as Disaster Service Worker while adhering to COVID-19 protocols. Recreation Leader II The Recreation Leader II is an intermediate-level classification in the Recreation Leader series. This classification is designed for high school graduates whose skill level in several broad types of recreational activities and is sufficient to assume responsibility for an entire recreation program or area. Under general supervision, an incumbent is responsible for the promotion, organization, and leadership of a variety of recreation activities. This class is distinguished from the Recreation Leader III in that the latter holds responsibility for planning and developing recreation activities. Recreation Leader III The Recreation Leader III is an advanced-level classification in the Recreation Leader series designed for college students who are skilled in several broad types of recreational activities. Under general supervision, an incumbent in this classification is responsible for the planning, organization, development, and leadership of a specific recreation activity or group of several closely related activities in specialty areas such as athletics/sports, aquatics, drama, arts and crafts, music, dance, therapeutics, nature, and camping . The Recreation Leader III may oversee the work of lower-level personnel and may lead and/or conduct clinics, programs, seminars, and similar gatherings in the specialty area. The Recreation Leader III is distinguished from the Recreation Specialist in that the latter exercises a higher degree of independence and holds greater overall program responsibility. The Recreation Specialist is distinguished from the Recreation Instructor in that the former has an emphasis on developing and supervising large groups of children in specialized recreation activities while the latter is responsible for developing class curriculum and teaching classroom activities. This classification is distinguished from the Senior Water Safety Instructor by the assignment of more complex tasks requiring a greater level of technical and specialized knowledge and a higher degree of independent judgment, including serving in a lead capacity over lower level staff.
