Introduction This examination is being given to fill several full-time and part-time vacancies in the Probation Department and to establish an eligible list to fill future vacancies. The Juvenile Detention Officer Assistant (JDOA) is the trainee level in the Juvenile Detention Officer series. As trainees, the incumbents are assigned to perform routine activities under close supervision and receive departmental training. Under immediate supervision, the JDOA maintains the safety, security and discipline in an assigned unit for juveniles; supervises and guides the behavior of juveniles; enforces facility rules and regulations; advises juveniles in proper standards of personal conduct; observes and assesses behavior and needs of groups and individuals within groups; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules. The Juvenile Detention Facility is a 24-hour operation. These positions require working rotating shifts which will include weekends and holidays, as well as working overtime. The shifts are: 6:00 am - 6:00 pm; 9:00 am - 9:00 pm; and 6:00 pm - 6:00 am. Candidates must participate in a mandatory orientation and successfully pass a background investigation, pre-employment physical and drug screen prior to employment. Selection Procedures Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will go through the following examination process: Written Exam : The civil service written exam is a multiple choice format. If the written exam is administered alone, it will be 100% of the overall score. Candidates must achieve a minimum rating of 70% in order to be placed on the eligible list. Oral Exam : The oral exam is a structured interview process that will assess the candidate’s education, training, and experience and may include a practical exercise. The oral exam selection process is not a hiring interview. A panel of up to four people will determine the candidate’s score and rank for placement on the eligible list. Top candidates from the eligible list are referred for hiring interviews. If the oral exam is administered alone, it will be 100% of the overall score. Candidates must achieve a minimum rating of 70% in order to be placed on the eligible list. Written & Oral Exam: If both a written exam and an oral exam is administered, the written exam is weighted at 60% and the oral exam is weighted at 40% unless otherwise indicated on the announcement. Candidates must achieve a minimum rating of 70% on each examination in order to be placed on the eligible list. Rate-out: A rate-out is an examination that involves a paper rating of the candidate’s application using the following criteria: education, training, and experience. Candidates will not be scheduled for the rate-out process. Note: The rating of 70 referred to may be the same or other than an arithmetic 70% of the total possible points. Introduction This examination is being given to fill several full-time and part-time vacancies in the Probation Department and to establish an eligible list to fill future vacancies. The Juvenile Detention Officer Assistant (JDOA) is the trainee level in the Juvenile Detention Officer series. As trainees, the incumbents are assigned to perform routine activities under close supervision and receive departmental training. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: General Law Enforcement: Enforce local, county, and state laws. Employee investigates criminal and non-criminal occurrences, makes arrests, interviews witnesses, transports prisoners, and testifies in court proceedings as required. Patrols the campus and other property owned or operated by the University using various vehicular, foot, and stationary assignments. Investigates traffic collisions, enforces traffic laws, provides safety escorts, responds to radio calls accordingly, responds to emergencies as needed and performs other duties as assigned. Training: Participates in training which includes classroom instruction and on-the-job training. Employee must meet all training requirements established by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training and Department policy. Employee will assist the department with hands-on field training of officers. Serves as the Field Training Officer for new recruits, Student Assistants, and Parking staff. Report Writing: Writes reports to accurately describe events as they occur or as they are described to the employee. Includes drafting traffic collision sketches and crime scene diagrams as needed. May be required to generate reports on a computer. Communications: Participation in public speaking as requested by superior officer e.g. address housing residents, conduct public tours, safety talks. Communicate with a multiethnic and diverse community. Community Interaction: Builds rapport between professional/civilian employees, students, volunteers, staff, faculty and visitors by promoting public trust through ethical behavior and adherence to a set of core values as set forth by the Division of Administrative Affairs. Seeks opportunities to foster partnerships and build diverse teams within the university community. Supports the principles of community oriented policing. Leadership: Function as assistant watch commander or patrol agent responsible for leading a shift and providing training and/or direction to officers in the field QUALIFICATIONS: Eligibility to be a police officer in the State of California, graduation from a P.O.S.T. academy, a valid P.O.S.T. Certificate of Eligibility or a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate in good standing Two or more years of active law enforcement experience. Thorough knowledge and understanding of law enforcement methods and procedures, criminal codes and laws, and investigative techniques and procedures. The Corporal independently performs general law enforcement and patrol duties and a variety of specialized work assignments. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Ability to provide effective leadership and direction to field personnel during assigned shift Ability to demonstrate proficiency in the use of firearms, defensive tactics and emergency vehicle operation.
