THE POSITION IDEAL CANDIDATE STATEMENT The ideal HVAC Systems Mechanic candidate installs and repairs various air quality systems. The ideal candidate will be experienced in locating and diagnosing maintenance problems on HVAC equipment, and quickly performing emergency repairs. In addition to maintaining systems, they will also install new ones. This candidate will possess skills in performing routine maintenance, communicating with customers, ordering equipment, working autonomously and with a team, utilizing measuring and testing equipment, and reading blueprints. Under general supervision, the HVAC Systems Mechanic responds to service requests to perform skilled diagnosis, repair, overhaul and replacement work in heating, air conditioning, ventilation, refrigeration, and building automation systems for a wide variety of equipment in City facilities and buildings. The HVAC Systems Mechanic will monitor, program, repair and adjust digital controls and field devices for building air conditioning, heating, ventilation and other various mechanical/electrical systems. The HVAC Systems Mechanic will perform all preventive maintenance tasks and other system checks to ensure proper indoor air quality, system efficiency and occupancy comfort. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This journey-level classification is populated with multiple incumbents. Incumbents typically work alone on corrective and preventive maintenance work assignments while referring only the most complex problems to the supervisor. The HVAC Systems Mechanic differs from that of Senior Systems HVAC Mechanic in that the former is a journey-level position with no responsibility for supervision. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED General supervision is provided by higher level staff. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Install, operate, repair, overhaul and develop preventative maintenance programs for commercial and industrial heating, air conditioning, ventilating and refrigeration systems. Install, calibrate, and maintain pneumatic, electrical, digital and electronic controls. Report major system problems to supervisor, or lead person verbally or in writing. Monitor and recommend changes to improve efficiency, economy and to conserve energy. Maintain boiler rooms, equipment rooms and other areas in a clean and orderly condition. Repair or replace systems including air handlers, compressors, condensers, appliances, furnaces, ventilation fans, building automation controls, package and split systems and other related equipment as required. Stationary Engineers operate, maintain, and repair HVAC systems in a variety of buildings throughout the County. Responsibilities include resolving customer complaints related to airflow, heating, cooling, and ventilation; responding to HVAC related alarms and elevator malfunctions; calibrating and maintaining pneumatic, electric, and computerized (DDC system) controls; inspecting chillers and ensuring containment and proper handling of refrigerants, which may contain chlorofluorocarbons and other hazardous materials; and other related work as required. The Public Works Department is currently recruiting to fill four (4) vacant positions for the Stationary Engineer classification. What you will typically be responsible for: Performing regular inspections of your assigned facilities for proper equipment operation. Recording and maintaining maintenance records of all mechanical equipment in your facilities. Inspecting and logging conditions of fire extinguishers and emergency lighting. Testing and treating open and closed loop water systems used for heating and cooling. Responding to routine and emergency work orders submitted by customer departments. Working with outside contractors who perform EPA and OSHA required inspections and testing. Working with fellow tradespersons on tenant improvement projects within the County. Out of state motor vehicle operator’s license will be accepted during the application process. Certificates: Must be Type 1 or Type 2 certified for Handling Chlorofluorocarbons at the time of application, and obtain a Federal Universal Certification for Handling Chlorofluorocarbons within nine (9) months from the date of hire. Education: 1) Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or high school proficiency certificates and (2) satisfactory completion of at least one college-level course in BOTH basic refrigeration and electricity OR completion of a HVAC trade school program. Experience: Two (2) years of full-time or its equivalent experience as a stationary engineer or operating engineer maintaining and repairing HVAC equipment.
