Position Description This is an extra-hire, 24 hour/week position from late April through mid-November. Under general supervision offers varied technical and administrative support to Agricultural Biologist/Standards Inspectors performing routine inspections, enforcing agricultural and weights and measures programs and projects. As directed, applies pesticides as appropriate for the control of weed, insect and vertebrate pests in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. Assists with inspections of incoming and certain outgoing shipments of plant material for evidence of disease, insect and weed pests which are prohibited. As directed, inspects apiaries for honeybee diseases and other pests. Assists with inspections of nurseries for compliance with regulations relating to labeling, grades and standards of cleanliness. Assists with inspection and testing of commercial weighing and measuring devices for compliance with laws and regulations. Assists in inspection of licensed weighmasters for compliance with established laws and regulations. Prepares and conducts appropriate training sessions. Job Summary Under the general direction of the Plant Sciences department head and in consultation with the Plant Sciences Operations Manager, this individual primarily oversees the orchard production areas and associated facilities, with additional responsibilities at facilities and land areas including, but not limited to the Horticulture & Crop Units greenhouses and field production areas. The incumbent will be responsible for the orchards’ irrigation and fertilization program, including but not limited to the installation, operation, and maintenance of filtration, irrigation and chemigation systems; the orchards’ integrated pest management program, including scouting, and the appropriate selection and use of pesticides and other control measures; and environment and operational (i.e. labeling and tractor computer) systems. The incumbent will also provide services in support of instructional laboratories and research projects, including assisting faculty in the set-up of laboratory classes, providing training to faculty and students in the proper use of equipment and safe execution of orchard operations, scheduling orchard operations in concert with safe and timely access by faculty and students for lab and research projects, and providing supplies and ensuring equipment is kept in good working order. The incumbent will provide oversight and technical training to student personnel at the Crops Unit. The incumbent is responsible for performing or supervising all phases of safety and food safety training and crop production activities, maintaining department adherence to safety, food safety, and pesticide regulations, and maintaining records and inventory (pesticides, tools, safety equipment, etc.). Department Summary The Plant Sciences (PLSC) Department is a major academic unit within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES). The department is comprised of a department head, full-time faculty and part-time lecturers, support staff, 275 undergraduate majors, and a varying number of student-assistants. The facilities associated with PLSC include the Department’s Crops Unit, with 70 acres of evergreen and deciduous fruit trees and berry production, 35 acres of forage crop and annual row crop production, of which 11 acres are certified organic, and 10,000 sq. feet of greenhouse space; a 16-acre Horticulture Unit consisting of 40,000 sq. ft. of greenhouse space, extensive outside production and display areas, and 7,500 square feet of shade houses; and the Leaning Pine Arboretum. The Department offers the Plant Sciences major leading to the Bachelor of Science degree. Job Summary Under the general direction of the Plant Sciences department head and in consultation with the Plant Sciences Operations Manager, this individual primarily oversees the orchard production areas and associated facilities, with additional responsibilities at facilities and land areas including, but not limited to the Horticulture & Crop Units greenhouses and field production areas. The incumbent will be responsible for the orchards’ irrigation and fertilization program, including but not limited to the installation, operation, and maintenance of filtration, irrigation and chemigation systems; the orchards’ integrated pest management program, including scouting, and the appropriate selection and use of pesticides and other control measures; and environment and operational (i.e. labeling and tractor computer) systems. This position is 100% in-office Monday through Friday, with an 8am to 5pm schedule. As a Business Property Auditor-Appraiser, you will gain experience auditing accounting records based upon data contained in the accounting records and from physical inspections of properties in the field. Additionally, you will learn how to explain business assessment auditing procedures and methods to the general public, businesses, and commercial firms. You will also learn to apply auditing and appraisal theories and techniques to assess valuations of businesses' assets and improvements, as well as personal items like boats and aircrafts. As a Business Property Auditor-Appraiser , you will also be responsible for the following: Conducting business property tax audits on various sizes and types of businesses and properties including in-person visits to business locations Determining assessed values for business assets and fixtures Providing customer service via phone and in person to taxpayers Assisting taxpayers with their property tax matters and property statement filings Verifying the accuracy of property statement data that is reported by the taxpayer Preparing for assessment appeals and testifies before the Assessment Appeals Board Performing in-person site inspections when needed to collect and verify property data, equipment, fixtures and other improvements Performing computer searches of data for property ownership, valuations and other information As an ideal candidate, you will possess: Experience with bank and general ledger reconciliations, tracking fixed assets and preparing depreciation schedules Familiarity with creating financial statements and related financial reports and completing a Business Property Statement and Agricultural Property Statement Knowledge of California Revenue and Taxation Code The ability to obtain permanent certification through the California Board of Equalization Strong public-speaking and communication skills Good listening skills, empathy, compassion and patience toward others Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) skills Possession of the Certified Public Accountant license is highly desirable Please note: The California State Board of Equalization (BOE) is responsible for the certification of state and county assessors' personnel performing appraisals for property tax purposes. A degree with a specialization of accounting consists of either 18 semester units (or quarter equivalents) of accounting and/or auditing courses from a recognized institution of higher education. Business law and economic classes may not contribute toward the 18 units; or 19 semester units (or quarter equivalents), 16 of which must be accounting and/or auditing courses from a recognized institution of higher education, and 3 semester units may be either business law or economic classes.
