Job Summary Reporting to the Engineering Central Shops Department Lead, the equipment technician maintains equipment within the college, with a particular focus on Mechanical Engineering. The equipment technician assists with faculty and student projects. Key Responsibilities Maintains and upgrades equipment and instrumentation in Mechanical Engineering laboratories, such as robotics, mechatronics, controls, measurements, thermal systems, and mechanical design laboratories. Ability to troubleshoot and repair, install and replace, modify and maintain equipment and associated instrumentation in mechanical/aerospace specializations down to the module level. Examples include pumps; vacuum units and gages; engines; pressure, temperature, strain, positioning, vibration, velocity and acceleration sensors and associated conditioning units; pneumatic and hydraulic actuators and controls, and electromechanical devices. Equivalent to two years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment or related experience in the type of equipment to which assigned as part of instructional support activities may be substituted for one year of the required experience, or 3. Equivalent to two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in the type of equipment repair to which assigned, completion of an apprenticeship program, or completion of a full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and repair for one year of the required experience License A valid driver's license is required for this position. Position Information Do you have drafting and design experience? Position Summary Under the general supervision of the School Director, the Equipment Technician will perform preventive maintenance, repair, assembly or fabrication, and installation of the School’s equipment in specialized facilities that support creative practice in ceramics, furniture design and woodworking, jewelry and metalwork, book arts and printmaking, drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, graphic design, interior architecture, and multimedia. SELECTIVE CERTIFICATION In accordance with Charter Section 1010 (b) and Civil Service Rule 5.31, selective certification will be used for some positions that require special skills and/or training in one or more of the following areas. Only persons possessing the following may be considered for appointment to fill such positions: Skills and/or training in radio, fiber-optics and microwave; or Certifications in public safety communications systems from Motorola, Harris, Nokia, or Aviat; orCompTIA Network+ Certification; or Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I) Fiber Optics Technician (FOT) Certification; or A valid General Radio Telephone Operator’s license issued by the Federal Communications Commission. SELECTION PROCESS Examination Weights: Multiple-Choice Test - Qualifying Interview - 100% The examination will consist of a qualifying multiple-choice test and interview. In the qualifying multiple-choice test, the following competencies may be evaluated: Safety Focus; Customer Service; and Job Knowledge, including knowledge of: principles of electricity and electronic theory including DC/AC; common sources of trouble in communications systems and various communication systems problems; methods of installing, servicing, rebuilding, and repairing communications systems; electronic test equipment, tools, and materials used in the construction, servicing, installation, and repair of communications systems; radio communication systems; voice network systems sufficient to troubleshoot, install, and/or repair; subnet masks; safety precautions and hazards in working on or installing electronic and communications equipment including the proper safety use and care of hand and portable power tools; and the ability to understand, prepare, and work from communications plans, schematic, diagrams, sketches, drawings, and cable records; differentiate wire and cable colors; and other necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities. Candidates invited to participate in the on-line multiple-choice test will be able to take the test as instructed from a remote location using a computer with a webcam and a reliable internet connection. Candidates will receive an e-mail from the City of Los Angeles outlining the dates and specific steps on how to take the multiple-choice test on-line. Candidates who do not complete and submit the remote proctored multiple-choice test on-line using a computer by the specified date and time will not be considered further in this examination. Passing Score for the Qualifying Written Test The passing score for the qualifying multiple-choice test will be determined by Personnel Department staff after the qualifying multiple-choice test is administered. Consideration will be given to the number of candidates taking the test and the existing and anticipated number of vacancies, such that there are a sufficient number of eligible on the list to satisfy current and future vacancies for the next two years. Therefore, the passing score for the qualifying multiple-choice test may be set either above or below 70% . The examination score will be based entirely of an evaluation of professional and personal qualifications by interview.
