MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a full-time tenure-track teaching position and will require participation on Cal Maritime’s annual training cruise on board the Training Ship Golden Bear in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement and the cruise faculty MOU. The Department of Engineering Technology offers the Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering Technology and Facilities Engineering Technology degrees and provides instructional support to other degree and professional training programs on campus. The responsibilities of this tenure-track position include but are not limited to : Instruction of marine and facilities engineering technology coursework in classrooms, laboratories, simulators or aboard the training ship. Curricula taught may include: Steam, Diesel or Turbine Power Generation Ship Propulsion Simulation Ship’s Systems Electrical Systems Diagnostics HVAC Refrigeration Plant or Ship Operations Other fundamental engineering courses associated with the Engineering Technology program Student advising in the Marine Engineering Technology and Facilities Engineering Technology programs. Creative and/or scholarly activities that advance knowledge within an engineering field. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Current U.S. Coast Guard license as 3 rd Engineer Unlimited or higher, with appropriate STCW endorsements, is REQUIRED . Licenses in continuance may be considered. Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline of engineering or engineering technology (marine, mechanical, electrical, naval, or industrial) or related field. Engineering leadership role experience, and/or Leadership training experience SALARY COMPENSATION : Hiring salary for cruise academic year (includes ~65-day summer sea training assignment on board the training ship) is budgeted at $8,250 - $9,000 per month commensurate with experience and qualification. CSU Salary Range: $5,830 - $9,928 per month. The incumbent must participate in a random drug-screening program as required by federal law PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Typical classroom and office environment are in a two-story building with elevator access. NOTE THE FOLLOWING REGARDING THE TRAINING SHIP GOLDEN BEAR'S (TSGB) PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS : Work site aboard the training ship requires climbing up and down ship ladders and gangways; lifting and carrying material from pier to training ship; and occasional work in excess heat, cold, dampness or dry atmospheric conditions. All mariners should be capable of living and working in cramped spaces on rolling vessels, maintaining balance on a moving deck, rapidly donning an exposure suit, stepping over doorsills of 24 inches in height, opening and closing watertight doors that may weigh up to 56 pounds, pulling heavy objects, up to 50 lbs. in weight, distances of up to 400 feet, climbing steep stairs or vertical ladders without assistance, participating in firefighting and lifesaving efforts, including wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), and lifting/controlling fully charged fire hoses.
