Under direct or general supervision or direction, performs technical duties and responsibilities in the maintenance, repair, service, and troubleshooting of equipment and machinery in wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations, and related facilities; performs preventive and corrective maintenance on assigned plant equipment and machinery; operates and maintains a variety of hand and power tools and equipment. Specifically, this person will be able to work independently; communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing; adhere to established policies and procedures; perform technical tasks utilizing specialized industry techniques and tools (e.g. calipers, verniers, micrometers, torque wrenches) relative to the assigned area of responsibility; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during work. This person will be part of a team that performs high-precision millwright craftsmanship work quality. When assigned to Field Maintenance: Perform work on process equipment in the plant, including boilers, pumps, mobile and stationary engines, air and gas compressors, evaporators, scrubbers, blowers, centrifuges, bar screens, augers, hydraulic systems and conveyor systems. Perform complex preventive mechanical maintenance on process equipment in the plant by inspecting and cleaning equipment, including but not limited to replacing oil, adjusting and/or replacing belts, gear boxes, pistons, rollers, filters, valves, gaskets and other related parts. Perform complex corrective mechanical maintenance on process equipment in the plant by troubleshooting cause of malfunction using visual inspection and precision measuring and testing instruments and replacing or repairing broken parts such as gauges, gaskets, plugs, coils, wires, bearings, drive lines, valves, pistons, rings, crankshafts and pumps. Rebuild equipment by disassembling, cleaning, and repairing mechanical malfunctions; reassemble, install and test equipment to ensure that it is in proper working condition. As a Senior Mechanic, initiate and complete documentation for confined space entry procedures; may oversee and direct work of staff during a confined space entry or special project requiring a team to complete the task; read schematic drawings to determine location and layout of equipment; isolate and tag equipment to be worked on before performing mechanical maintenance. The following is required for mastery of the ELECTRICAL craft: Troubleshoot, maintain, repair, program, and replace complex electrical equipment, A/C and D/C control circuits, magnetic starters, interlock systems, and alarms, to ensure reliable and safe electric generation. Maintain and calibrate electrical equipment such as circuit breakers, main generator, voltage regulator, exciter, protection circuits and relays, in plant transformers, bushings, transfer switches, and other electrical devices. Set up and test various electrical equipment with the use of special testing devices to measure voltage, current, and resistance or locate faults, malfunctions, or device failures. Duties 4-8 are available at any of the Austin Energy Power Plants. The following is required for mastery of the INSTRUMENTATION AND CONTROL craft: Responsible for installing, calibrating, testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining protective circuits, computers, metering, monitoring, and control systems on boilers, turbines, generators, and plant auxiliary equipment. Remove, dismantle; clean; maintain; and assemble instruments and replace defective components. Perform in shop bench work and component troubleshooting on instrumentation. Reads, and interprets electric generating plants piping & instrument diagrams, wiring and logic diagrams to locate, identify, troubleshoot, and repair plant systems, instrumentation interlocks, etc. Duties 4-9 are available at any of the Austin Energy Power Plants. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Ability to wear a respirator where work environment requires. Ability to work 12 hour rotating shifts if work assignment requires.
