Description
Modesto Irrigation District is recruiting to fill one full-time position in the Accounting Department, Finance and Treasury Division to perform technical and highly detailed work in support of district wide accounting and accounts payable functions. This classification is under general supervision from the Senior Accountant and required to perform work of a confidential nature, including research, analysis, and accurate preparation of reports in support of all payments at the District.

This classification requires well developed accounting technical skills, accuracy of work product, and knowledge of accounts payable, sales tax rules, and 1099 processes.

Any Qualified Individual May Apply. This is a non-exempt position as is allocated to the Administrative, Technical and Clerical Bargaining Unit. The list established as a result of this recruitment may be used to fill other Senior Accounting Technician vacancies within the District that may occur through October 29, 2022
Examples of Duties
  • Processes invoices, expense reports, and check requests for payment in accordance with District policies and procedures
  • Ensure timely processing to receive vendor payment discounts
  • Verifies the accuracy of received orders and vendor invoices
  • Reviews invoices and requisitions for satisfactory payment approval
  • Researches and resolves discrepancies in a variety of documents and transactions such as returned checks, purchase documents, vendor statements, and problem invoices
  • Batches invoices for processing
  • Answers questions from departments and vendors regarding purchases and invoices
  • Maintains files of invoices, payment requests, payment vouchers, and related documents
  • Researches and assembles information from a variety of sources for reporting of all payments to the board of directors and the management team
  • Provides information to district management, staff, and the public on an as needed basis
  • Maintains the District’s credit cards according to the District policies
  • Assists auditors for purpose of providing supporting documentation and /or information on internal processes that is required for audit
  • Collects and maintains valid W-9 forms on suppliers for 1099 filings
  • Processes IRS 1099 forms
  • Maintains and disburses funds in accordance with the District’s policies

Typical Qualifications

Any combination of education, experience, knowledge and abilities may satisfy the necessary minimum qualifications. A typical way to obtain the education, experience, knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: Graduation from an accredited two-year community college with major course work in Accounting, Business Administration or closely related field OR four (4) years additional experience above the minimum requirement performing an acceptable level of accounting may substitute for the education requirement.

Experience: Four (4) years experience in related work with a minimum of two (2) years general accounting or financial experience. Experience in a public setting is a plus.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Interpret and apply complex policies and procedures to financial record keeping activities
  • Making accurate mathematic calculations
  • Knowledge of bookkeeping and general governmental accounting principles and procedures
  • Communicate both verbally and in writing and interact with employees at all levels of the District, suppliers, and the public
  • Ability to research and solve problems in an efficient timely manner
  • Ability to prepare financial analysis spreadsheets
  • Knowledge of District rules, procedures and practices governing purchasing, accounts payable processing, and related financial transactions
  • Knowledge of the District approved purchasing policy as it applies to accounts payable
  • Knowledge of laws pertaining to IRS 1099 processing
Special Requirement: Must have a valid California Class C license.
