The San Bernardino County Fire District , Household Hazardous Waste Section , is accepting applications for the position of Hazardous Materials Technician I . These positions are responsible for handling hazardous waste to collect, sort, and transport in a safe manner, following established guidelines and codes. Hazardous Materials Technicians will work weekends and will work outdoors in all weather - rain, sun, heat, wind, etc. - to perform job duties. Hazardous Materials Technicians assist other staff in hazardous waste management and inspection activities, and at community events. The San Bernardino County Fire District Household Hazardous Waste Section is committed to providing safe and efficient hazardous waste management services. The ultimate objective is to protect health, natural resources, and the environment. Staff is devoted to the provision of fast and friendly service to County residents and small businesses. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT 1) Must have a valid California Class C Driver license. 2) Must successfully complete the 24-hour HAZWOPER and 8-hour DOT training classes within six (6) months from the date of hire. Must successfully complete other program related training, such as forklift and program vehicles operation, within six (6) months from the date of hire. 3) Must be able to work on Saturdays. Must be able to work occasional Sundays. Work schedule will vary. 4) Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted; duties require constant bending, lifting, and standing for long periods of time. 5) Must be able to work outdoors on a continuous basis, in extreme weather, including sun, rain, wind, high heat, humidity, etc. 6) A successful background check is required prior to assignment Minimum Requirements Must possess one of the following Options: Option A: Experience: One (1) year (full-time equivalent) of experience in a hazardous waste environment; experience must include working with hazardous materials, or processing related records, as the primary responsibility. Option B: Experience: One (1) year (full-time equivalent) of substantial in-person public contact/customer service experience, working in a fast-paced environment and directly with the general public on a constant basis, such as in a food or retail sales environment. Option C: Education : Fifteen (15) semester (23 quarter) units of completed college coursework in a related science, such as hazardous materials, environmental studies, biology, chemistry, and other closely related fields of study. NOTE: Ensure your work history clearly details qualifying experience, experience in a Hazardous Waste Environment, and experience operating pallet jacks, forklifts, and any other equipment used in loading/unloading. Desired Qualifications Applicants possessing related certifications, such as the 24-Hour or 40-Hour HAZWOPER Training certifications, are highly desired. The ideal candidate will also possess excellent communication skills, as well as the ability to interact with the public in a positive manner. In addition, the ideal candidate will also have experience operating pallet jacks, forklifts, and physically loading/unloading materials from transport vehicles.
