Position Description Calaveras County offers a competitive compensation and benefits package. The annual salary for this position is $123,281 - $149,864 with a 3% increase effective January 2024 (bringing the annual salary to approximately $126,963 - $154,356), a 3% increase effective January 2025 (bringing the annual salary to approximately $130,769 - $158,974), and a 3% increase effective January 2026 (bringing the annual salary to approximately $134,680 - $163,737). DEFINITION: Under general direction, assists the Public Works Director with the management of day-to-day departmental operations; assumes substantive and significant responsibility for specific departmental or division(s) administration; and does related work as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is a management level position which serves as a principal assistant to the Department Head. Incumbents in this classification may act on behalf of the Department Head in their absence and will normally be assigned responsibility for one area/division such as general engineering, road maintenance, project management, development services but may oversee other divisions or programs within the department, as assigned. DEFINITION: Under administrative direction, plans, manages, supervises, and coordinates the daily operations, services and activities of the Engineering Division to include the City’s civil engineering design, inspection, construction administration, surveying, right-of-way encroachment permitting, development plan review and approval processes; coordinates division activities with other City officials and departments or outside agencies, and provides responsible and complex administrative support and performs other required duties as necessary.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: The Deputy City Engineer is the single class position with the overall responsibility for all administration and management of the Engineering Division functions including water and environmental services, public works inspections, capital improvement projects and land development. This classification oversees a large range of assignments and requires specialized professional knowledge and the ability to exercise independent judgement and initiative in scheduling, assigning, planning, and coordinating the work with that of other units. Basic Function Plans and directs Metro′s government relations program, as it relates to federal, state, and local legislation, by advocating Metro′s policies, projects, and programs before federal and state legislative bodies, and regional and local governments. Implement measures to ensure compliance with state and federal preservation regulations related to historic property treatments proposed or performed under historic tax credit programs, Section 106 undertakings, preservation grants, and/or the monitoring of state held easements and covenants. Work with other DWM staff to facilitate access to the various guidelines, specifications and standard details by DWM staff and City developers and design professionals. Assists with budget development and tracking of operational expenses, staff utilization and planning, staff recruitment and oversight of workforce development.
