Position Summary Position Summary: As part of a multi-disciplinary health care team, conducts activities which focus on the emotional and developmental needs of children and families using play and other forms of communication and education; Assesses and recommends programs and policies that will provide a safe, therapeutic and age-appropriate pediatric environment. Job Requirement Education/Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Child Life, Child Development or related field. Must have completed 600 hours of clinical child life work experience. Licensing/Certification Requirements: Obtain Certification as a Child Life Specialist within 6 months of hire. Basic Life support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA). Additional and/or Preferred Position Requirements Possess Certification as a Child Life Specialist. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Physical Requirements Knowledge of: Child Life Assessment techniques; psychosocial care of hospitalized children and family dynamics; bereavement support; principles of pediatric growth, cognitive and emotional development; Adult and child education principles and practices; medical terminology; common pediatric injuries and illnesses; department and hospital safety practice and procedures; patient rights; age specific patient care practices; infection control policies and practices; handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures. Skill in: Needs assessment techniques; developing and evaluating Child Life educational programs; conducting educational programs using a variety of training tools; Use of developmentally appropriate educational aides; assessment documentation; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment; using computers and related software applications; communicating with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Mobility to work in a typical office setting including stamina to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time, and use standard office equipment; vision to read printed materials and a VDT screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
