Job Description


The BIORESOURCE and AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA, is seeking a full time, academic year, lecturer starting January 9, 2023 or September 14, 2023. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in Agriculture Machinery Safety; Ag Power and Machinery Management; Power Transmission (belts, gears & hydraulics); Agricultural & Construction Materials, fabrication, and SolidWorks. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Duties may include supervision of undergraduate senior projects.

Required Qualifications/Specialized Skills:

Master’s degree in a relevant agricultural engineering discipline, or a related field is required. Applicants should have a combination of teaching, and practical experience in the design, fabrication, operation, and management of machinery.

This position requires an individual who has demonstrated the ability to provide students with hands-on engineering education in a multidisciplinary, systems-based environment. Must demonstrate excellence in teaching, effective communication, and interpersonal skills. The ability to be a productive team player and to interact well with peers, students, industry, and the general public is essential. Must demonstrate a commitment to inclusivity and diversity.

Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interests in undergraduate teaching are required. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language is also required.

Preferred Qualifications/Skills:

Industry and agricultural equipment experience is preferred. Experience with online course development and online teaching preferred. Candidates should have a strong commitment to teaching excellence and laboratory-based instruction. Candidates familiar with the management of a large team of students to put together a regional event like the Cal Poly Tractor Pull at Open House is preferred.

The BioResource and Agricultural Engineering (BRAE) Department has two programs: BRAE and Agricultural Systems Management. Both programs are ABET accredited, and graduates from both programs are eligible to become registered professional engineers. We are proud of our Learn By Doing philosophy. Nearly every course has a hands-on lab section. The BRAE program is a traditional engineering program where the students take a full suite of math and science courses (calculus, physics, and chemistry) and the basic courses for engineering (statics, dynamics, and strength of material classes). Our ASM students take a reduced load of calculus, physics, and chemistry classes, and we have designed special classes for the ASM students to learn about engineering design. The ASM students take a suite of Agricultural Business classes, and the curriculum looks at problem solving with a systems approach. BRAE courses typically have 40 to 48 students in lectures and 24 in labs. For the most part, our faculty teach their own labs. If you are a hands-on instructor that wants to really know your students, then teaching in the BRAE Department at Cal Poly is the place for you.
