DEFINITION:

Exercises technical and administrative supervision over personnel engaged in administering radiation treatments for the cure and palliation of disease.

Essential Job Functions

  • Schedules, assigns and rotates technologists through various posts to obtain flexibility of assignment and assure operational continuity of services.
  • Evaluates work performances, interviews for hire, recommends resolution of employee relation's problems, and counsels employees in work-related problems.

  • Reviews treatment plan observes equipment settings, patient handling and shielding techniques for adherence to prescribed protocol and standards of ethics and performance and provides corrective direction to personnel.
  • Trains personnel in the clinical radiation therapy treatment and communicable disease control techniques; grades performance and documents evidence of completion of training.
  • Provides guidance and trains therapists in molding and casting shields and fitting them to Linear Accelerators.
  • Reviews therapist’s operation of therapy machines, for proper technique and procedures and to determine need for maintenance and repair and directs the ordering of supplies to ensure operational continuity of the radiation therapy section.
  • Trains technologists in the operation of computer-controlled equipment and positioning patient by operating electrical controls.
  • Prepares statistical reports of daily operations, employee competency and reports of operational status of equipment; uses these to project and substantiate budgetary requests for equipment and personnel.
  • Develops and revises radiation therapy procedures to supervisors and implements changes in operations as authorized.
  • Attends seminars in the field of radiotherapy technology to maintain knowledge of developments in equipment and procedures.


Requirements

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:

Two years of experience in the administration of radio therapy treatments under the supervision of a radiologist.

LICENSE(S) AND CERTIFICATE(S):
Certification in Therapeutic Radiologic Technology issued by the State of California, Department of Public Health -AND- Certification in Radiation Therapy issued by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT).*

PHYSICAL CLASS III - MODERATE :

Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION(S):

Additional credit will be given to applicants who possess the following desirable qualifications:
  • Experience in providing radiation treatment to patients using the Varian ARIA Oncology Information System.
  • Experience with operating Cerner Electronic Health Record System.
  • Additional experience in excess of the Selection Requirements.
  • Experience leading or supervising** Radiation Therapy staff.

** For this examination, leading or supervisory experience is defined as having the responsibility for assigning, coordinating, and reviewing the work, ensuring proper work methods are followed and providing technical assistance and training.

Additional Information

EXAMINATION CONTENT:
This examination will consist of an evaluation of training and experience based upon application information and supplemental questionnaire, weighted 100%.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be added on the eligible register.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
Applications will be processed on an "as received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

The names of candidates receiving a passing grade on the examination will be placed on the eligible register and will appear in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility.

NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

VACANCY INFORMATION:
The eligible register resulting from this examination will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Department of Health Services as they occur.

AVAILABLE SHIFT:
Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
