Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Director of Facilities Operations, the incumbent will operate buses, vans and other vehicles as required to transport students, faculty and staff for University-related purposes; to provide shuttle service for participants at University-sponsored events; and to meet other transportation needs as required for the University. Incumbents in this position are also sometimes provided Lead work direction by the Lead Automotive/Equipment Mechanic. Key Responsibilities: Incumbents in this classification operate a variety of vehicles associated with ensuring the University successfully fulfills tasks and responsibilities associated with providing transportation services to the campus. This consolidation brought together into a single jurisdiction the Castro Valley Fire Department, Eden Consolidated Fire Protection District and County Fire Patrol. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Either I : Experience : The equivalent of two years full-time experience in the class of Fire Department Mechanic in the Alameda County Fire Department. DESCRIPTION ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT THE ALAMEDA COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT (ACFD) provides all-risk emergency services to the unincorporated areas of Alameda County (excluding Fairview), the cities of San Leandro, Dublin, Newark, Union City and Emeryville, the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. With 28 fire stations and 34 companies serving a population of 394,000, the ACFD serves densely populated urban areas, waterways, industrialized centers, extensive urban interface, agricultural and wildland regions. Over 400 personnel and 100 Reserve Firefighters provide a wide variety of services to an ever expanding, dynamic and diverse community of roughly 508 square miles. This consolidation brought together into a single jurisdiction the Castro Valley Fire Department, Eden Consolidated Fire Protection District and County Fire Patrol. Subsequently, the following communities have contracted with the ACFD: July 1, 1995 City of San Leandro July 1, 1997 City of Dublin August 1, 2002 Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory October 1, 2007 Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory May 1, 2010 City of Newark July 1, 2010 City of Union City July 1, 2012 City of Emeryville On January 20, 2008, the ACFD became responsible for the administration and operation of the Alameda County Regional Emergency Communications Center (ACRECC). The dispatch center provides dispatch and regional communication center services for the ACFD, the Alameda County Emergency Medical Services Agency, Camp Parks Combat Support Training Center, and the cities of Alameda, Fremont, Livermore and Pleasanton. THE POSITION Under general direction, plans, organizes, manages and directs the operation of the Fire Department’s fleet services, which includes the fire apparatus, vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair shop. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Either I : Experience : The equivalent of two years full-time experience in the class of Fire Department Mechanic in the Alameda County Fire Department. OR II : Education : Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, AND Experience : The equivalent of four years full-time experience managing a fire apparatus maintenance shop which included at least one year experience in the supervision of subordinate staff. License : A valid California Class A driver’s license with the appropriate endorsements. Possession of a State Fire Mechanic certificate, level I and II is desirable, but not required. Special Requirement : Possession of own hand tools suitable for work performed. Is subject to emergency call while off duty. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies: Knowledge of : Current methods, tools and equipment used in the maintenance of automobiles and fire apparatus. Principles of gas and diesel engines, diagnostic equipment and hydraulics. Fire equipment and apparatus. Machine shop use, body repair, automotive painting and arc and acetylene welding techniques. Basic OSHA safety rules and procedures. Principles and practices of supervision and leadership. Ability to : Plan, organize, administer and evaluate the work of staff. Provide technical guidance to staff including writing and updating vehicle specifications. Plan and make recommendations on shop’s operation and budget. Make accurate estimates of repair costs and time. Prepare reports. Perform moderate to heavy physical labor for extended periods. Respond promptly to call-backs. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Maintain accurate record keeping and documentation. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Manage fleet budget. Manage billing and inventory control records. Maintain and reconcile expense accounts. Use computer applications (i.e. MS Word, Excel) related to the work. EXAMINATION COMPONENTS The examination will consist of the following steps: A review of the applicants’ application to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process. Anoral examination which will be weighted as 100% of the candidate’s final examination score. The oral examination may contain situational exercises.
