Under general supervision, operates various vehicles, heavy equipment and specialized equipment within the Public Works Department in one or more specified division.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Operates trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Operates construction of power equipment, including backhoes, front-end loaders and hydraulic excavators.
  • May operate a street sweeper.
  • May install or repair water and sewer lines; makes new water or sewer taps.
  • May vacuum and water jet residential sewer lines.
  • May inspect and clean man holes.
  • May perform various building maintenance and repair activities.
  • May use various hand and power tools for work projects.
  • May provide work direction to members of work crews.
  • Performs traffic control for work projects.
  • Ensures safety rules and regulations are followed.
  • Performs safety inspections of vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintains activity reports.
  • Provides assistance to other drivers as necessary.
  • May be required to investigate issues related to other divisions as a first responder until the needed division arrives.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
  • Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or equivalent; AND one year of heavy equipment and vehicle operations experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Equipment Operator
  • Operates light to medium sized equipment in the performance of a variety of construction, maintenance, and other work in combination with assigned vehicle’s operation or mode of function and performance light to heavy physical labor.
  • Typical work will be operating a mower and other light equipment.
  • Does not require a CDL.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Heavy Equipment Operator
  • Operates medium sized, specialized equipment in the performance of a variety of construction, maintenance, and other work including their use of attachments designed to perform specialized tasks in combination with the vehicle’s operation or mode of function and performs light to heavy physical labor.
  • Typical work will be operating backhoes, front-end loaders, bobcats, vac trucks, side loading sanitation equipment, and other heavy equipment.
  • Requires a CDL.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. Sr. Heavy Equipment Operator
  • Operates large, heavy industrial equipment and/or semi-trailer equipment, which requires a substantial degree of monitoring and/or coordination of the working attachments used in construction, earthmoving, and/or hauling heavy equipment and ground and waste materials, and performs light to heavy physical labor.
  • The Senior Heavy Equipment Operator is expected to provide leadership, guidance, mentorship, training, and instruction to less experience employees.
  • When a Crewleader or supervisor is not present on the job site, the Senior Heavy Equipment Operator is expected to be the employee providing guidance to ensure work is completed according to City standards.
  • The Senior Heavy Equipment Operator is distinguished from the Senior Crew Leader that Senior Crewleader provides more formal supervision and leadership.
  • Typical work will be operating any and all City owned equipment including Heavy Sanitation Trucks, tracked equipment, and tractor-trailer combination vehicles.
  • Requires a CDL.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:
Possession of a valid Texas Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License for Heavy and Senior Heavy Equipment Operator.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed primarily in an outdoor work environment. May be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases. May be required to work in confined spaces. May be required to climb ladders. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds.
