The Job

Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC) is recruiting for Hospital Cooks who prepare, cook, present, and serve food to patients, staff, and visitors at the Medical Center. The Cook II is responsible for preparing regular and specialized diet food in large quantities; roasting, broiling, frying, steaming, baking, and boiling meats, fish, vegetables, and other foods; recommending new menu items and substitutions to existing menu selections; overseeing the work of other cooks and food service workers; ensuring foods are prepared, presented and served in a timely manner; and maintaining a clean, safe and sanitary work environment while following established guidelines.

This recruitment may be used to fill Extra-help positions as needed. Hours may vary for Extra-help positions depending on the needs of the department. Full-time hours are not guaranteed. Extra-help positions are paid at a higher salary and are in the Unclassified Service which serve at the discretion of the appointing authority. These positions participate in the County's Part-time Seasonal Temporary (PST) Deferred Compensation Plan and do not earn any other benefits. Candidates selected for Extra-help positions are not precluded from being considered for full-time positions and may remain on the list for full-time employment. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT


Background: Applicants selected for this position must pass a background investigation, which includes verification of employment and education.

Physical: This position requires lifting up to 50 lbs., standing, squatting, and reaching.

Vaccination Requirement: Per the December 24, 2021 updated CA State Public Health Officer Order, all workers who provide services or work in facilities described in subdivision (a) of the order, including clinics and doctor offices, must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. In addition, CDPH Public Health Officer Orders updated on February 22, 2022 requires all workers in health care settings currently eligible for boosters, who provide services or work in the impacted facilities must be "fully vaccinated and boosted" for COVID-19 by March 1, 2022. Vaccination Exemptions: Upon hire, candidates will be required to submit proof of vaccination including the booster dose or request an exemption from the vaccination and booster requirements based on either religious belief or medical reasons.

Minimum Requirements

Experience: Applicants must meet one of the four options listed below:

Option 1: Three (3) months of full-time experience of large quantity food preparation in a hospital, school, military, correctional facility, hotel or similar large institution serving 100 persons or more at a time .

Option 2: Six (6) months of full-time food service experience at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center or any hospital environment.

Option 3: A community college Certificate in Culinary Arts.

Option 4: One (1) year of f ull-time experience as a cook in a restaurant or fast food environment.

-AND-

Certificate: Incumbents must obtain a San Bernardino County Food Handler's Certificate within two (2) weeks of hire.

Desired Qualifications

The department seeks a dependable candidate with experience leading kitchen staff in the preparation of large quantities of food in a healthcare setting. The candidate should be able to resolve problems and make decisions independently; meet deadlines; possess a working knowledge of advanced kitchen equipment and electronics; and adjust to unexpected changes in schedules, menus, and staffing in an effective, professional manner.
