Definition

Come join the Newport Beach Police Department as a part-time Police Cadet!

The eligibility list established from this recruitment will be used to fill future part-time Police Cadet vacancies as they occur.

Under general supervision, Police Cadets will have the opportunity to assist the Newport Beach Police Department with duties in a variety of assignments in the Patrol, Detective, Traffic, and Support Services Divisions. This is a great opportunity for individuals interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement to gain hands-on experience in the field.


Selection Components: 1. Application Evaluation:Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis with the first review date of February 15, 2024 (additional dates may be added as needed). The position will remain open until the position is filled.

2. Virtual Interview: Those candidates deemed most qualified as reflected in their online application will be invited to a virtual interview tentatively scheduled for the week of February 20, 2024 (additional dates may be added as needed). Successful candidates will be placed on an eligibility list and may be invited to begin the background process as positions become available.
Schedule:
Police Cadets may work up to 19 hours per week.

Experience & Education and License/Certificate

A combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: None required.

Education: Must be a senior in high school or enrolled in college. Cadets in high school must remain in school and graduate. Cadets enrolled in college must carry 9 or more college units per semester. All Cadets must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Major coursework in Criminal Justice or the Social Sciences is desirable.

License/Certificate: Due to the performance of some field duties which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required.

Age: Must be within the ages of eighteen and twenty-one years at the time of appointment.

Additional Requirement: Candidates deemed most qualified, as reflected in their application materials, will be invited to continue in the recruitment process. At that time, background information will be requested from the candidates. Prior to employment, the prospective candidate must successfully complete a thorough background review, including being fingerprinted by the Newport Beach Police Department. Record must be free from conviction of any felony, or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, and from an excessive number of citations for traffic violations. Background history should indicate responsibility, dependability, honesty, integrity, acceptable communication skills, good judgment and the ability to relate well with others. The resulting report of your conviction history, (if any), will be evaluated along with the other information received in connection with your application. Except as otherwise required by law, a criminal conviction will not necessarily disqualify you from the position. The nature, date, surrounding circumstances, and the relevance of the offense to the position applied for may, however, be considered.

Disaster Service Worker: In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, City of Newport Beach Employees, in the event of a disaster, are considered disaster service workers and may be asked to respond accordingly.

Benefits

This position is Part-time/Seasonal and is provided the following minimum benefits:

Part-time employees are enrolled in the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS) beginning on their first day of employment. The total defined contribution to the plan is 7.5% of your compensation of which the City pays 3.75%. The City does not participate in the federal Social Security program. Your benefits may be reduced if you work for an employer who does not withhold Social Security taxes from your salary.

Medicare:  Federal mandate requires all employees hired or rehired by any government agency on or after April 1, 1986 to participate in Medicare. The City matches the employee's Medicare contribution, which is 1.45% of salary. Enrollment and deduction amounts are subject to change based on negotiated terms and additional laws.
