Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Patrol Operations Commander, the Lieutenant, Patrol Operations is responsible for indirect supervision of a shift of police officers, corporals, and sergeants engaged in a variety of law enforcement, public safety, and crime prevention activities. The incumbent exercises indirect management oversight over a night shift of parking officers, community service officers, and student Matador Patrol staff.
  • Responsible for managing, preparing, administering, directing resources, reviewing and approving recommendations for functional programs and responsible for performing all of the duties performed by a sworn police officer.
  • Plans, assigns, and reviews the work of a shift of police officers, corporals, and sergeants, organized into shifts and engaged in various law enforcement and crime prevention activities, such as motorized patrols, traffic control and enforcement, K9, accident and crime scene investigations, preliminary investigations of alleged criminal activities, and the Community Service Officer program.

Qualifications
  • Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university in a job-related field is preferred
  • Seven (7) years of sworn law enforcement experience. Three (3) of the seven years of experience must be in a command role or a minimum of three years of experience as a police sergeant, preferably within the California State University (CSU) system, University of California (UC) system, or other comparable law enforcement agency.
  • Must be currently employed as a sworn police officer at the minimum rank of sergeant.
  • Must possess a Class C or higher California driver's license at the time of appointment and a satisfactory driving record is required.
  • Possess or qualify for a Supervisory Certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Leadership
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing community-oriented policing projects to solve complex community issues is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of law enforcement accreditation, federal, state and local laws, policy and procedure development, theory and practice of community-oriented policing, and techniques used in problem-solving policing (SARA). Knowledge of patrol, crime prevention, traffic enforcement, investigation and identification. Working knowledge of current law enforcement methods and procedures, current CA criminal codes and laws, and working knowledge of law enforcement accreditation programs.
  • Ability to: analyze situations, direct union personnel and manage performance (counseling, commendations) and progressive discipline process, develop effective team strategies with units/sections, work effectively in physically, psychologically, and emotionally stressful situations, and effectively manage emergency or life-threatening situations. Skill and proficiency in the use of firearms and intermediate force options.
  • Ability to: communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, coach, motivate and lead employees, operate police vehicles safely and appropriately, work effectively and collaboratively with other University employees, supervisors, community officials, other law enforcement agencies and the general public, o maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties.
  • Ability to safely operate the following equipment in the performance of duties: a variety of University-owned vehicles; communications equipment, such as two-way radios, cell phones, and pagers; Mobile Computer Terminals (MCT), various types of audio-visual equipment and any other equipment assigned, and ability to work on-call.
  • Work involves an element of personal danger and employees must be able to exercise considerable independent judgment and professional knowledge in making decisions regarding the use of deadly force in protecting citizens and themselves without the benefit of immediate supervisory assistance or advice.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
  • Salary is commensurate with knowledge, skills, and experience. The University offers excellent fringe benefits.
  • The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $130,000 - $140,000 per year, dependent upon qualifications and experience.

  • This position is a sensitive position as designated by the CSU. The selected candidate must pass a fingerprint clearance (LiveScan).
  • A thorough background investigation in compliance with CA POST standards (including criminal records check, medical exam and psychological exam) must be completed satisfactorily.
