Position Summary

The Learning Technologist provides technical consultation, application development, problem determination and resolution, training, and documentation for developing, integrating, maintaining, and supporting LMS architectures, enrollment systems, support database systems, and online courses at the College of Continuing Education (CCE). The incumbent leads development and maintenance of critical CCE Online learning infrastructure and implementation of web-based platforms. Position is responsible for web course management tools, student and course databases, and CCE LMS instances such as Moodle and Canvas. Emphasis is on enhancing student experiences and outcomes through building and maintaining scalable learning platforms and expanding services to offer to external clients.

FLSA: Exempt (Not eligible for overtime compensation)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,912 per month - $8,112 per month, commensurate with candidate's knowledge, skills and experience

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,912 per month - $ 12,124 per month

Department Information

The College of Continuing Education (CCE) extends the mission of the university by increasing access for non-traditional learners. With a primary expertise on serving adult learners, CCE provides programs and services to individuals and employers year-round, unbound by traditional semester schedules and formats. CCE serves a hybrid student body that extends beyond California, serving over 80,000 learners annually through in-person, hybrid and fully online workshops, courses, conferences, certificate and degree programs.

Minimum Qualifications

To enter this classification, a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in technical information systems and application program packages is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Information Technology Consultant, depending on the nature of the position assignment, may include working knowledge of common software application packages, equipment platforms, reference database systems and sources, and training methods and a basic understanding of networks, data communication and multimedia systems.

Required Qualifications

Experience

1. Experience with the backend configuration and optimization of the Moodle Learning Management System

2. Experience with other Learning Management Systems (such as Canvas, Blackboard or Sakai), database

administration, MySQL, MS SQL, Linux operating system, and the PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor scripting language.

3. Experience with system architecture with the critical context of the primary system being a Learning Management System.

4. Experience with Microsoft and Unix-based operating systems (Linux)

5. Experience with project management and planning.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

6. Effective communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to describe and present on technical issues in clear and concise language for both technical and non-technical audiences.

7. Ability to train and provide consultation to end users.

8. Knowledge of adult learning theory and the application of best practices in applying technology in the service of pedagogy.

9. Skill in the research, analysis and evaluation of IT systems.

Preferred Qualifications

10. Bachelor’s degree in computer science, instructional or educational technology or related field.

11. 5+ years’ experience in systems architecture particularly for Learning Management Systems and their integration to other academic enterprise systems for enrollment, registration, student metrics and analytics, eportfolio, web communication systems, certificate auto-gen, and completion records.

12. Familiarity with data migration methods as well as knowledge of best practices for software engineering and ITIL principles

13. Knowledge of multi-tenancy solutions for Moodle.

14. Experience working with IT systems in a higher education environment.
