The Communication Studies Department The Communication Studies Department in the College of Liberal arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, is seeking applications for a full-time, academic-year, tenure-track Assistant Professor to begin September 16, 2024. Area of Specialization (AOS): Performance Studies as it relates to Multi/Cultural Performance. Areas of Concentration (AOC): Performance or Oral Interpretation of Literature, Intersections of Performance, Culture, Race, and Identity in the U.S. and/or in Transnational Context(s), Critical Theory and Epistemologies of Black, Latinx/o/a, Asian, Indigenous, and/or Ethnic Studies, Intersectional Perspectives of Feminist, Queer, and/or Postcolonial Theory, Digital Communication, Social Media and Performance, Storytelling, Social Justice and Advocacy in Performance, Small Group and/or Intergroup Dynamics, Qualitative Methods of Inquiry (including, but not limited to, Ethnography, Autoethnography, and Performance Ethnography).
The ideal candidate will have a combination of university-level teaching experience, and research potential. We are seeking applicants with an earned or nearly complete doctorate in Communication Studies or Performance Studies, with demonstrable qualifications in Performance Studies, as related to Multi/Cultural Performance.
Responsibilities Primary teaching duties include courses on Performance, Literature, and Culture and Group Performance of Literature for Communication Studies majors, as well as general education students. Depending on Communication Studies Department teaching needs and the candidate’s teaching interests, the successful candidate could also teach from our rich set of course offerings, including Intercultural Communication, Intergroup Communication, Critical Cultural Studies and Communication, Small Group Communication, Communication Theory, and Public Speaking. Non-instructional duties include engaging in productive research and
scholarship, service, and academic advising and mentorship of undergraduate students.

Salary Anticipated Hiring Range: $81,888 - $87,550/year, $6,824-$7,296/month

Required Qualifications - Ph.D. in Communication Studies, Performance Studies or related discipline, earned or nearing completion (degree completion expected no later than August 2024).
- Demonstrated success in undergraduate teaching.
- Strong record of scholarship in performance theory, methods, and/or practice with a focus on multi/cultural performance in the United States and/or transnational context(s).
- Evidence of potential for scholarly and/or creative achievement in AOS.
- Demonstrated commitment to anti-racism, inclusion, diversity, and educational equity.
- Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language.
Preferred Qualifications - Demonstrated university teaching experience in undergraduate performance of literature class or similar lower-division performance studies course.
- Potential for grant development in areas related to AOS.
- Willingness to participate in interdisciplinary programs overlapping with AOS, including course development and possible program curriculum development.
- Demonstrated experience and commitment to student-centered learning and teaching.
- Demonstrated ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings.
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive, and inclusive environment.
- Preference will also be given to those with relevant work experience and those who bring professional capabilities.
