POSITION TITLE: Tenure-Track Assistant Professor


DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

The Computer Science Department, a part of the College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) at California State University, Sacramento (Sacramento State) offers a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree program in computer science, a Master of Science (MS) degree program in computer science, and a MS degree program in software engineering.

The Computer Science and the Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) departments also co-sponsor BS and MS degree programs in computer engineering. The BS program in computer science is ABET CAC (Computing Accreditation Commission) accredited, and the BS program in computer engineering is ABET EAC (Engineering Accreditation Commission) accredited.

California State University, Sacramento is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), located in Sacramento, the heart of Northern California, one of the most beautiful, diverse, and rapidly growing high-tech areas in the country. Sacramento is a high-growth metropolitan area with a very diverse population of approximately two million. As the State Capitol, Sacramento houses the headquarters of many state agencies, including California Department of Motor Vehicles, California Department of Transportation, California Department of Health Care Services, California Department of Education, etc. The department has strong ties with the local industry and counsels with an active industry advisory committee that provides feedback on the educational objectives of our programs and assists in our program assessments. Faculty members have the opportunity to perform research and consultancy in a wide variety of industries in the area and throughout Northern California, including Silicon Valley. Computer science faculty take a leadership role at the ECS Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance and Security Education, designated by the Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Agency. The department also administers an NSF-funded Scholarship for Service Program. The Department of Computer Science has a diverse faculty and student population including 16 full-time faculty members, and enrolls over 1700 undergraduate students and over 100 graduate students, which include 63 percent of students of color and 10 percent of international students.

POSITION DETAILS:

The position is a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, starting in Fall 2024.

JOB DUTIES:

Duties include:
  • Teaching, supporting, and developing a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses and laboratories in a range of computer science areas, typically up to 12 units per semester, which includes interest and excellence in teaching and mentoring diverse students and diverse assessment practices that support course learning outcomes and promote student success;
  • Engaging in research and scholarly activities by publishing in peer-reviewed conferences and/or journals;
  • Seeking sponsored funding to support laboratory development, research and/or teaching;
  • Supervise and engage with graduate students on Master’s theses and research projects.
  • Performing instructionally related duties such as curriculum development, program assessment, and student advising;
  • Taking an active role on departmental, college, and university committees and participating in diverse professional activities and community service;
  • Contribute to Sacramento State’s initiatives by bridging active social scientific inquiry with decisions made at the State Capitol; and
  • Support the University’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion by making teaching inclusive for students of different ethnic backgrounds, genders, and socioeconomic statuses.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must have:
  • Ph.D. in computer science, computer engineering, or a closely related field. ABD candidates will be considered. If ABD, all requirements for the degree must be completed by August 1, 2024;
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more areas of computer science, and an interest in developing curriculum in emerging areas;
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching a wide variety of computer science courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels;
  • Demonstrated ability to relate theory to practice;
  • Demonstrated interest and excellence in teaching and mentoring diverse students;
  • Evidence of scholarly potential, including but not limited to journal and conference publications, and the potential to obtain external funds for laboratory development, research, and/or teaching; and
  • Effective communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Applicants specializing in all areas of computer science will be considered. Candidates with an educational background in computer science or computer engineering or a related subject area are encouraged to apply;
  • Industrial and practical computer science or computer engineering experience;
  • Prior college or university teaching experience; and
  • Demonstrated interest and ability to develop curricula related to emerging technologies.

OTHER SPECIFICS ABOUT THE POSITION (Optional):

The estimated salary range for this position is $88,000 - $105,000, with an anticipated annual salary of $93,000 depending upon qualifications and experience.

Out of State Employment

Per CSU-wide policy (HR2021-04), all faculty who will begin initial employment (or return from a 12-month break in service) on or after January 1, 2022 are required to perform their work from within the State of California.
