Associate Counselor in Housing

Salary and Benefits - Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Position appointment is subject to budgetary authorization. The anticipated hiring range is $2,149 - $2,345 /month for this part time position (32 hours per week).

The CSU salary schedule information for the Post-Masters Counselor Intern Classification is available based on the following range:

$2,687.00 - $2,932.00/month (40 hours per week).

About the Position

Working under the supervision of the Director of Counseling, the Associate Counselor in Housing provides intake assessment, crisis intervention, and short-term individual, group, and couples counseling to University Housing residents who are currently enrolled in classes. The Counselor works collaboratively with the Student Health and Counseling team, the University Housing and Residential Life team, and campus and community partners in a multidisciplinary approach to help students achieve and maintain optimum wellness.

The counselor designs and implements outreach programs and interventions and serves as a liaison to University Housing and Residential Life. The counselor contributes to the overall training of campus staff through workshops and mentorship.

This is a temporary, part-time (0.80 time-base) position for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Anticipated start date is Fall 2023 (August 21, 2023). The Associate Counselor in Housing may potentially transition to a licensed Counselor in Housing position at a higher salary, if an incumbent with positive evaluations successfully achieves licensure.

Responsibilities

Associate Counselors provide clinical services including intake assessment, crisis intervention, short-term individual, group, and couples therapy, and some case management. The Counselor in Housing also provides outreach programs about mental health, training and consultation for University Housing staff, and debriefing and assistance during University crises as needed.

Required Qualifications
  • Strong clinical skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to provide time-limited individual counseling, couples counseling, group counseling and crisis intervention.
  • Ability to provide debriefing and assistance during university-wide crises.
  • Ability to make presentations to large and small groups on campus, and design outreach programs for Housing residents.
  • Flexibility to work after hours or on weekends for occasional outreach programs or crisis intervention.
  • Demonstrated ability to connect and communicate effectively with diverse student, faculty, and staff community.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have completed an accredited master's level program in counseling, marriage and family therapy or social work.
  • Must be registered with BBS with a valid Associate or Intern number at time that position begins.

Preferred Skills and Knowledge
  • Experience on multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals and primary care clinicians within an integrated center.
  • Experience working in higher education, particularly in Residential Life, strongly preferred.
  • Experience facilitating both psychoeducational and interpersonal process groups.
  • Experience treating a wide variety of issues, including substance abuse, relationship issues, depression, anxiety, sexual assault, autism spectrum disorders, anger management, sexual disorders, eating disorders, and/or domestic violence.
  • Proficient in electronic scheduling and records
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Spanish, Mandarin, or Cantonese

Condition(s) of Employment

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including LiveScan, as appropriate), that may include, but is not limited to: criminal records check, verification of academic credentials, licenses, certificates, credit history, professional references and/or verification of work history is required for employment. Unsatisfactory results may also affect the continued employment of current Cal State East Bay employees who were conditionally offered the position.
