POSITION SUMMARY: Under supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor, the Lifeguard is responsible for monitoring and ensuring the safety of patrons using the aquatic facilities, as well as enforcing rules and regulations regarding pool use. Position completes routine and complex assignments requiring specialized knowledge and/or be responsible for assisting in the oversight of a critical operation, project or service.
The Student Recreation Center is a comprehensive campus recreation center that offers a diverse range of recreational programs and services to the CSUN community.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: - Maintain constant surveillance of members in the facility; act immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency;
- Enforce rules and regulations regarding pool use
- Provide emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services
- Present professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer service
- Perform various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility
- Prepare and maintain appropriate activity reports
- Perform other related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Equivalent to graduation from high school and/or a technical/vocational program.
Experience and Certifications: - American Red Cross Lifeguard/Lifeguarding
Special Requirements : - Must be able to swim 300 yards continuously using both front crawl and breast stroke
- Must be able to swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10-pound object and remove it from the pool within 1 minute, 40 seconds.

Preferred Qualifications: - Advanced First Aid Certification (Title 22, EMR, EMT) Preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is typically performed outdoors in varying and occasionally extreme (hot) weather conditions. Must be flexible, adaptable, and readily able to adjust to changes in work environment. Position requires daily public contact. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. SUPERVISION: Supervision is provided by the Aquatics Supervisor.
PAY, BENEFITS AND WORK SCHEDULE: This position is employed through the University Student Union (USU).
Anticipated hiring rate: $18.12 per hour; summer rate*: $21.12 per hour
Effective June 23, 2024, the hiring rate will be $18.66 per hour; summer rate*: $21.66 per hour
*The summer rate is in effect June through August.
The salary range of the position is as follows:
$18.12 - $19.37 per hour
Effective June 23, 2024, $18.66 - $19.91 per hour
HOURS: Part-time, up to 28 hours per week
POSITION TYPE: This position is considered a non-student position. Current CSUN students may apply but must be eligible and/or able to work up to 28 hours/week during the academic semester(s).
TEMPORARY: Temporary 6-month appointment, may be extended. Schedule varies based on department need. Work schedule to be determined by supervisor.
