The Department of Agriculture/Weights & Measures (AWM) is recruiting for Agricultural/Standards Officer Trainees who work under training conditions while learning the regulations and procedures and obtaining licensure and experience necessary to interpret, implement and enforce agricultural and weights and measures laws, regulations and policies.

The Agriculture/Weights & Measures Department conducts regulatory programs and provides related services to protect the agriculture industry, businesses, and consumers in the County through the fair and equitable application and enforcement of laws and regulations. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Promotion: Agricultural/Standards Officer Trainees are eligible for promotion to Agricultural/Standards Officer ($54,080- $78,041 annually) upon receipt of six (6) core licenses and a satisfactory progress report. Agricultural/Standards Officer Trainees must qualify for promotion within 36 months or be terminated.

Physical: Incumbents must sit, stand, bend, squat, kneel, twist and stoop. Requires grasping and fine manipulation in both hands. Frequent lifting and carrying of up to 50 pounds. Occasional lifting and carrying of objects up to 70 pounds and pushing/pulling of a loaded cart weighing up to 130 pounds.

Travel/License: Travel throughout the County is required. At the time of hire, a valid California Class C driver's license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced and maintained for the individual providing the transportation. A Class A or B license may also be required depending on the assigned duties.

Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must undergo a background check, which includes fingerprinting and a medical exam.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in any discipline with a minimum of 30 semester (45 quarter) units in one or any combination of the following disciplines:

  • Agriculture Science
  • Biological Science
  • Chemical Science
  • Physical Science
  • Mathematics
  • Statistics

Qualifying degrees must be completed at a college or university accredited by an accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education. In addition, degrees completed outside of the U.S. must be accompanied by an evaluation report from a reputable credential evaluation service indicating equivalency to degrees or coursework completed at the college or university accredited by an accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education.

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree in Agricultural or Biological Science from an accredited four-year college. Possession of a valid California Class A or Class B diver license and one or more of the required State of California Department of Food and Agriculture licenses are highly desirable.
