The Job

San Bernardino County Museum is currently recruiting for a creative and detail-oriented Museum Preparator to assist in operations and maintenance. Essential job duties include restoration and repair of exhibit components, and the design and fabrication of exhibits, lighting or text displays, as well as exhibit construction to specifications.

Under the supervision of the Museum’s Fabricator, the Museum Preparator prepares gallery walls for installation, including patching, light painting and cleaning; advises curators and artists on practical aspects of the installation of objects and artworks; installs and de-installs exhibit components as indicated by curator(s) and artists; handles art, objects, and equipment in a safe and professional manner; packs and unpacks exhibits per standards in the field; keeps supplies, tools and equipment organized; and performs related work as required.

The San Bernardino County Museum is located in Redlands, and was founded in 1952. The San Bernardino County Museum contains exhibits and collections in cultural history and natural history. As part of the museum experience, there are public programs available for adults, families, students, and children. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must undergo a background check, which includes fingerprinting and a medical exam.

Work Schedule: Employees are required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Travel: Travel throughout the County is required. A valid California Class C driver license is required at time of appointment, and must be maintained throughout employment. Employees in this class may be required to use personal vehicles and show proof of automobile liability insurance. Mileage reimbursement is available.

Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is unable to consider to candidates who require Visa Sponsorship at this time or in the future. Candidates must be able to present their legal right to work in the United States at the time of employment.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent. EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of recent work experience directly related to museum exhibit or theater construction and maintenance.

Desired Qualifications

In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will possess:

An Associate's degree in a related field;

Knowledge of
  • Principals, techniques, and practices of art and object handling used in gallery/museum exhibitions;
  • Standards in construction techniques, common building supply materials, hanging and installing exhibits, painting, and setting lights.
Ability to
  • Take direction and aim for excellence
  • Regularly lift up to 35 pounds and occasionally over 75 pounds;
  • Have physical stamina to climb ladders and be on your feet;
  • Use common hand and power tools;
  • Work independently and within time constraints and deadlines;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with all persons contacted in the course of work including fellow employees and other County representatives, curators, artists, volunteers and outside vendors;
  • Drive a passenger van and truck.
